Broody Hen Thread!

Ok, so this is how it goes....

I was once told by a very wise woman about chicken math.....

When you are counting your chickens:

* Bantams count as half a chicken

*Chicks dont count at all

*Roosters dont count at all

So go recount and see if that makes you feel any better about your addiction, it did me

This is exactly how I count mine.

Ha! Sounds like me. I make scrambled eggs (with shells) for my girls all the time. I step out of the house and I'm surrounded by 8 little girls all jockeying for position. We aren't supposed to have chickens in our town which is weird because it's a little country town. But lots of people do and as long as your hen's aren't walking up the middle of Main Street blocking the Mayor (yes, this did happen a few years back) no problem. Those people were asked to get rid of their chickens. I don't know why they didn't contain them in the first place and no, a split rail fence won't do it.

Anyway, I am obsessed and would definitely be out of control if I wasn't afraid of being caught and told to get rid of them all. We just got 4 Serama eggs because I explained to hubby that Serama are so small, even if they all hatch it's still just like adding one more hen.

Ha! I want bantams. I'll have to try that one with my husband.

As for the eager little faces. I just came in from working on the new pen for the babies and took out a huge soft burrito shell that I could toss to the hens to keep them out of my hair while I worked and the minute I stepped into the pen the chicks were in their window eagerly jumping up and down. Momma has taught them from the start that I am the Treat Lady and if I come into the pen, I always bring good stuff to eat. So I broke off a small piece and gave it to them. It's more fun to watch them play keep away than put fence together anyway.

Malkered, I compliment you on your rescue effort. I live in fear that some body is going to roll in asking me if I want their chickens. I would have a hard time, as in not being able to, tell them no. My husband and I have 5 dogs and 5 cats now because of that weakness. I'm sure our local Amish neighbors find our pampered chickens to be a source of great amusement that they talk over at their dinner table every night.

I'm so hooked that I'm seriously considering moving out of town to a more rural location so that I can have a lot more birds mine are in a back garden environment but I am very lucky with my neighbours. I canvassed 6 houses in each direction and none are bothered about the presence of the chickens and most have even said they like to hear the roosters crowing. Of course they get free eggs on occasion.

And broodies don't count either...you see, they aren't laying...so you only count the CURRENT layers.

Which is why in my byline I can get away with 15+ hens....that's my "layers" as the others don't count.

There are times I have to confess...I don't even KNOW how many chickens I've got....I've got to start counting on my fingers, going through the coops, re-counting those that don't count.

But don't tell anyone.

Okay, I finally got 5 of them to hold still long enough to get a picture of them with mom.

The three on the left are Buff Os. The littlest on the far left is one of my little miracle chicks named Rocky due to it's rocky start in life. The two on the right are Buff O/Wellie mix. The other two grabbed bread and ran.

I think momma Aggie is doing a great job with them.

Awww look at your chicks sooo cute I went shopping at Danz and picked up the cutest little clutch of 6 pullets but not sure i can post their pic here since they aren't from a broody hen?

Huh? Really? Well, lets see. Some hen laid them somewhere didn't she? That makes her sorta kinda broody.

I vote to see them!

I need to try to get a pic of one of our babies that evaded my camera this afternoon.. It's coloring is really different from the others and I am starting to wonder if maybe momma isn't my lone little Sussex hen, Speckles. Maybe somebody has seen one like it before.

Microchick,
True that ok here are my new pretties in a group shot ;) some of them have already told us their names ;)

Will get better pics tomorrow but trying not to stress them any more tonight....don't mind the mess that is my hubby idea of cleaning the living room for me while I was gone the chicks have now been moved to their private room but that was to just make sure everyone was ok after the drive to their new home.
