Broody Hen Thread!

emergency question!!!!!!!!!! i was baby sitting some kids for my friend and they wanted to paint their nails, so i gave them some polish and they were playing with it. i was in the bathroom when i heard a "oh no!" apperently, they were trying to paint my new born chick's nails and it ate a couple of drops right from the bottle! it has it all over its eye feathers, and it's whole inside mouth is pink. will it die? i didnt want to get mad at the kids, but inside i was raging! they should have asked me first....kids... anyway, i hope it will survive...do you think it will make it? how do i help it?
I have no idea, but keep us posted please. Fingers crossed here!

Keggen, I don't know what could have happened to the last egg. I must admit I'm giggling a little at the thought of one of your buyers cracking a babychick-egg open.

If you have checked all of the gathered eggs and none of them were marked then you must be safe though.

As for the other questions I'm not sure, but maybe it has been a chilly night and she decided to pluck off some feathers to help keep her eggs warm? For water I use a teaplate with marble-sized stones in the water. so the chicks can drink but not drown :)

It is almost funny, I agree. I even candled some just in case. Where would one little egg disappear to? Hnnnn. Not sure the tea plate would work in my coop, it's a converted shed and I can see the adults just steeping all over something like that. But thanks for the idea anyway. :)

Maybe she booted it out and someone else took it? Ate it perhaps? I'm just making guesses. SOMETHING must have happened to it though!

I've heard that in some countries it's a delicacy to eat cooked almost-finished-incubated duckeggs. If someone comes back saying they had a baby chick in an egg, you should charge them extra for it.

update: the little one survived the night. he is still looking like his clumsy newborn self being plooped on the floor of the brooder, and only taking clumsy steps to join with its week old buddy. i have dipped his beak in water but he still isnt drinking on his own, nor is he eating.hes pecked a little at the feed, but never eats any. what should i do? is this normal for a 2 day old chick?

I have my first ever chick!!!!! 1 araucana x hybrid, its day 26 now and no sign of any other.

I am going to move her and her nest to a new, safe place.
Hoping she wont leave it before any others have the chance to hatch (is this a bit chancey?)

So thrilled- thought it wasnt going to happen this time round!!!!

Nice, congrats on the babychick! Hope he/she gets some siblings too. Maybe you have calculated wrong? I did, so mine came as a total suprise two days early, haha!

I'm going to pick up my hatching eggs in a few hours. Can't wait!!! My broody hen will be so happy . . . I hope. ;)
Do Cochins do well with RI reds?
