Broody Hen Thread!

I don't know whether to laugh with relief or cry. I put Aggie back with the flock just now after I found two eggs she had left me in her broody nest. While she has still been tearing and tossing pieces of bread to the chicks, (now 4 weeks old) she has been doing little else for them so the eggs cinched it that it was time.

She isn't showing any signs of wanting to be back with them and has rejoined the girls that sit on their outside roost. The flock master immediately covered her so things are back to normal I guess. I really enjoyed the last 7+ weeks that I spent with our broody hen, first patiently waiting for 21 days to pass, hoping that her brooding in cold weather didn't cause any damage. Then hatching the last two eggs in the house when she abandoned them and returning them to the nest with her. The last three weeks watching the little personalities coming out on them as they feathered out and now wondering who is a boy and who is a girl.

Lordie I wish another hen would go broody for me........

I have 2 black Australorp hens that both hatched out 10 eggs of their own then both decided that my 2.5 week old incubator chicks ( 50 of them ) were also their babies and I came to the barn and I had 2 Australorp mommas trying to sit on all 70 chicks

. The funny part was the big chicks were perfectly happy to be sat on even at almost 3 weeks old.... Hahaha
And the mommas have been taking care of all the chicks ( both littlies and biggies) ever since and everyone is happy as a lark

I feel for you Microchick,
There is so much fun and excitement going on it feels like a let down when they move on to normal activities. I understand

like I said earlier, you need to get some Silkies, Cochins or maybe a Serama. You will be in broody heaven.

You might have a point there, 16 paws. The funny thing is yesterday my husband asked me how many chickens we had. Not chicken math how many chickens but straight out. I told him at this point, 24. He asked me how many I wanted to have and I gave him one of those looks that said I was afraid to answer that question which is what he expected from me. He told me to write on the calendar how many chickens we had as of Easter this year and he bet me by this time next year the number would be 50.

Something tells me I'd better not write that number down. He knows me waaaaayyyyyyy to well.

Thanks Fisherlady,

I removed the roost. You should see mama right now. Its about time to get up there with the chicks and she just keeps looking up like, "I know it was there a minute ago"...darn
Now lets hope she doesnt decide to take them up on the supports for the roost, those arent so easy to remove. lol
