Updates on my babes currently....

Olive has been the most excellent momma, and that little chick has integrated fully into the flock, running more and more on its own sturdy legs. Pretty sure rooster, so he will be finding a new home or going to freezer camp. (It's possible someone may want him for his genetics).

The co-broody rescue situation....The Queen Mum Silkie has taken over that rescue hatchling. She's off the nest finally and put up camp down below in the dog crate as apparently chick is not making it up and down the ramp. (No worries, I put food and water out for them).

She left the next batch of eggs with a happy Rosie who is sitting on my next batch of 4 CCL/Barnevelder (Barnebar) eggs. Hopefully I'll get a female or two out of this...last candle showed 3 of the 4 developing.

Thus far, it looks like the sexlinking is holding up...first with head dot (slight whisp) looks to developing into male; second has a clear head dot, and I think barring coming in. We'll see if it is male as well (which I think genetically it should be).

Really hoping to get some Barnebar Olive Eggers if I can just get some females hatched. Still working in small batches as, unlike @PD-Riverman I don't have that kind of space. (In my dreams.)

Olive (Isbar/Marans) laid again today even though she is still sleeping at night with babe...a lighter olive than she was laying before, but much better size. She's fertile as Barney has "integrated" her fully back into the flock. I may see what that 2nd generation OE produces with my Barnevelder although I am a little leery of the Isbar blood in her from her line (have had really bad luck with it so far). Her chick was crushed I assumed because of the coop situation, but all Isbar chicks I've hatched from this line have been very lethargic at hatch, so that may have contributed. (Some lines of Isbar have been too closely inbred to where weak chicks have resulted....not sure I want to add that possibility into my line).

All in the quest for that elusive egg color. Right now, I'm going for olive and shades of green. Then I'll start working on the Marans blood with the Splash for some blue-laced dark layers....then eventually I'll try for L-A-V-E-N-D-E-R egg shells! (No idea where to start with the genetics on that one).

Time. Only takes time. (money, room, energy, hard work,)

Yes, LofMc I agree with you 100%. I have a sweetheart of a rooster in the Buff O alpha. My broody's hatch gave us a pure bred son of his and I'm hoping he grows up to be just like his old man. So far he has the same attitude Red had at his age so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Even the two Welsummers for their occasional missteps are pretty good natured roos. This is Larry BIrd's last chance. He's as strong as a young bull and will be dangerous if this last ditch effort doesn't work. Tonight I kept my broom at my side and there wasn't a problem with him. He hates that broom even though all I did last night was chase him with it. There was no question about him staying out of my space.

I do not want my roosters to be lap pets, but co-existence and mutual respect is mandatory. I could have been hurt a lot worse last night if I hadn't been wearing my muck boots. Luckily, the only person who ever enters my coop/run beside myself is my husband and he won't take any nonsense from him either. He's out of chances. Next time it's the freezer camp.

Nice Chicks!! No I am no cop. I have always Loved the river----spent a lot of time there--not as much in the last few years. The Name of the river is Little Pee Dee. The lake on my property 150ft from my chicken pens flows to the Little Pee Dee river a few miles down, so I am the PD-Riverman.

Dani4Hedgies, I love that little chick in the last picture. What is it's heritage?

If you mean this little guy...it looks like an Ancona to me.

The top 3 feathered legged could be Brahma if pea combs; Cochins if single combs. Not sure about the clean legged chick in the middle...could be a Partridge Rock (single comb) or Partridge Wyandotte (if rose comb). Post the answers when you get them from the breeder. Cute batch of chicks.

From Danz The top one is a mottle, probably not a good mottle due to the amount of black it has now. The second one is a partridge. The others are brahma. I'm so happy you still got 50% after all those problems.
