Broody Hen Thread!

The green thing in the brooder has chick feed and water. I'm pretty sure I fI put it anywhere else it will be in the way of them moving around.
How soon do I need to open it up so she can take them out?

Thanks! Do you have an idea when they go broody? They're 17 weeks now and not laying... but when they are laying is it just at random times? -Trying to figure out the broody hen lol

The best answer I can give to the "when will they go broody" question is this...

They'll go broody at the most inconvenient times (like, in the dead of winter or a week after you hatch chicks in the bator) :gig
There doesn't seem to be a magic number or special recipe for broodiness. Those hormones kick in and they just do what they do. Who knows, maybe the planets align or they get a message beamed down from the mother ship.
If you can figure out how to make a hen go broody when you want, I'd like to know that secret :)

I can attest to "the dead of winter" decision to go broody.... I mean, really, my little silkie hen, what are you thinking...?

Darn. Well hopefully somebody else will so I can have the chance at chicks without having to buy them! lol
I have two Barred Rocks who just hatched a brood each and one more on the nest sitting. So, depending on the breeding stock, they may work for you. The two that have chicks are great first-time mothers. BTW, they are 15 months old.
