Broody Hen Thread!

You could give it a try with her out when you are there to supervise??? How old are these boys? If they are young they should do better as they get older. My boys help care for the chicks. Momma should be pretty protective and will warn them to stay away also. I know my girls will not let any of the other chickens near their babies that they don't want near them. No matter how small the Momma is. LOL They bring them of the nest, ready to kick butt. LOL

I just seen your other post. Yeah, at 4 months they are in what I call that horrible teenage boy phase! He should settle down as he matures and might end up being a good protector and helper with the chicks.

Too late! I have made my decision LOL he's going on the table. I have had enough. Crowing at 5 am and then again at 6. GRRR. I have a blue splash marans roo that I will keep, he's good to the ladies, he was never a trouble maker, and I have a little more trust with the kids outside in the yard with him (not fully but there's a little there). I think the side-kick roo (or hen -whatever it is) will do fine without the bad influence around. it won't be terrorized as much and I think it gets along better with the hens.

Problem solved LOL

Same here. First try, ebay eggs. 1 male hatched. Second, ebay again, no hatches. Got one female in a batch of day old chicks. 3rd hatch - market eggs, hatched 4 but the colours are all wrong. Eggs were the righ to colour but chicks are not - who's the daddy?

Well it doesn't look like I will be getting my brooder coop back anytime soon so we added 2 more nest boxes to the main coop. So that's 4 boxes between 6 hens with one being used by my broody hen, Cilla. so what do they do? They all try to get into Cilla's box! :he

Hey guys is there any way you can make your hen go broody.

i was just wondering that, if an elevated temperature in a hens body is important for broodiness, long daylight hours is also important and broodiness is contagious, would that mean that if you kept a broody breed in a very warm shed with artificial lighting, another broody and an unattended clutch of eggs, would that be the perfect conditions for broodiness?

Ok I have my first broody and she's a silkie. I got her a little over a month ago with her husband and 4 kids. I took her kids and put them in their own pen. And she has layed 19 eggs for me. 11 went to the bator and then she layed 6 and then went what I think is broody. She hasn't gotten off the eggs except once in the morning to eat and drink and get molested by her husband lol. I went out today to clean pens and feed and water and she layed 2 more eggs while being broody. Is that normal? Now she is going to have a staggered hatch.

So my chicken had a baby 5 days early and yesterday I noticed she abandoned the eggs. I was about to throw them out when I heard a peep and it moved in my hand. I quickly put it back. The next day she wasnt sitting on them. The egg was cold, no peeps but I could feel a little movement. What do I do? I don't have an incubator so that won't work

I'm so glad the chick is doing well...what a great idea to have mom take care of her inside too.
