Broody Hen Thread!

I took all my broody's babies away, cause the Sizzles r sold, & gave her 3 BO chicks. I hadn't had them in the brooder yet, but let them dry 24 hrs, or so, in the hatcher. She seems to be doing ok now, but about 20 min after I gave them to her, she left them in the nest & went wondering around the run. So I shooed her back in & blocked them all in there. They finally crawled back under her.

Of there is food and water in there and plenty of room to potty, but how long should I keep her blocked to be sure they learn her "language"??

Hmmm. About how many days after final hatch do they usually wait to start bringing them out with everyone else?

Could be straight away or three weeks it depends on the hen but mine usually wait about a week, and they are very protective of them ahha

Yeah when I 1st moved them all to the house in the ground, my Frizzled Cochin roo decided to go in for a visit. It was a massive fight!!! He acted like he was going to hurt them, of course she didn't let him and I was were I could reach in an grab him if needed, but tryin to let her handle it. Wow!

How precious!! Is that a Barred Rock? I'm thinking someday if I get bored with my BO's, I may switch to Barred Rocks. I just think they r soooo beautiful! My kids call them "Zebra chickens". Lol

Hi Sonderah, yes, Betty is a Barred Rock. I love this breed. Great layers and she is such a great mama. She is only 9 months old. I didn't think she would go broody so young. I'm loving watching her raise the chicks and showing them where food and water are...priceless! Babies are a week old now.

my plain red hen is walking around the coop making a cluck cluck cluck noise with the past 4 or 5 days she seems like she has pulled feathers from under her belly is this usually what they do befor they actually sit
