Do Rocks or RIR's ever go broody? And if they do, how often?

I can't speak for RIR.... but many rocks do if they are from breeding stock that it hasn't been bred out of. Many folks didn't like broodiness because they wanted more egg production, so they worked for years to reduce the tendencies. If you find what is often referred to as 'heritage' stock you have a much better chance of having a broody.... and ask the breeder when you find one. If the breeder has had their birds for a few years they should have a good idea of the broody frequency of their stock.

I had a broody hatch out some Silver Pencil Rocks last year, out of the 5 pullets hatched I have had 4 go broody and raise chicks already this year, and they won't be a year old for another 2 weeks... so yes, some versions of rocks go broody.

Is your RIR from a breeder or from a hatchery? If she's Hatchery likelihood is that she won't. Her parents were selected down lines where broodiness has been selected against. Because most folks want egg layers --not broodies. When they are broody, they are not laying. A breeder may not specifically select for that rather more body type for shows and such. It depends where you got her and that will give you a sense of likelihood...although nothing is ever written in stone with chickening...this I've learned through the years.

Lady of McCamley those Rhodebars look amazing. Some of the Hens are stunning...and the Roosters...? There are no words. Lots of variation too on the barring...but to me that's part of the fun sometimes...wow.
Yes the Rhodebars are amazing...beautiful and great utility (so I am told).

Here are my newest babies...hatched Monday night...only 4 of the 6 (one was indeed an early quitter, and 1 chick must have gotten shrink wrapped and never hatched).

I "think" I have 1 boy (yellow) and 3 girls (chipmunks)...the yellow chipmunk might be a boy too? The breeder said look for head dots...but none of them have head dots....other sites say boy Rhodebars are yellow and the girls chipmunks...so I've got 2 chipumunk girls, one yellow boy...and then a yellow chipmunk...go figure.

Here they are...2 days old (with a very protective momma...Ms. Marvel my avatar...isn't she a beauty too? I've never figured out what she is...she is a mixed breed from a grab bag of eggs from the feedstore...best I can figure is Wyandotte and ???? either EE or OEG...your guess is as good as mine)...no matter what she is, she is a fine momma thus far.

Oh my.....! Thank you for sharing! They are so beautiful. What a delight to see them...and already curious out exploring away from the hen. That's fun to see too. It will be interesting to see what your little yellow chipmunk turns out!

The Broody is amazing too. I see where you are getting Wyandotte....She looks a little Partridge-y to me too. Gorgeous, nonetheless. I have a Wyandotte mix too. She has a single comb, but clearly Wyandotte shaped body and the feathering sort of looks like SLW...but a lot more black. She is a champ egg layer...a bit bossy...but the mixed chickens have so much character I think. She talks a lot...asks me questions. Hilarious.
