Broody Hen Thread!

Thanks for sharing the picture! What breed is your hen? She's definitely beautiful! I also love the colors on the chick on the far left in the picture, do you have a close up of that one?

online people sell broody hens because they do not want them u could just search for those! a good breed for broody hens are cochins and black astralorps! and u will NEED a rooster! Good Luck!!

:gig This made me chuckle! I have an incubator, so certainly wouldn't buy a broody :)
Especially when I already have 4 Silkie hens and an OEGB. I just think they should operate on my schedule. Not wait for this Spring nonsense ;)

I don't have a pic for y'all but my sweet Buff Orp Lucy is broody for the first time (she's my first broody) and she's 9 months old. She's in the coop but I don't want her in there because it's not safe for chicks, the big girls would have free access to little chickie snacks once they hatched. Tonight I moved her and the 5 dummy eggs she's sitting on to a rabbit hutch in the covered run. But it's COLD outside right now, low to mid 30s in the daytime and mid 20s at night. She didn't want to stay there because I made the mistake of giving her a red heat lamp when I moved her, so I locked her in the hutch and turned off the light for the night. I know she'll be OK tonight as the coop nest boxes are just as cold, but I wonder what to do about keeping her on the new nest before giving her real fertile eggs? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer me! I want her to sit comfortably in this cold weather and successfully hatch some chicks in safety of the hutch.

Forgot to mention that over half my dozen chickens usually lay their eggs in the hutch to begin with, so I have no idea why she didn't want to stay there tonight. Maybe just confused until she sees her dummy eggs all safe and sound underneath her in the morning.

HI,, thanks for letting me come in on this thread and ask.. My buff silkie is laying on some eggs (9- not hers) she is now on and off... usually on.. but it is so so cold now it was just below 0 inside the coop - 27 outside.. water is frozen a bit.. will the eggs make it or is it to late? Kristin
