Broody Hen Thread!

Thanks...I'm getting ready for my first 'chickens in snow' adventure. But it is supposed to be warm again by the weekend. I cleaned the coop yesterday so it would be ready for them. I'm really hoping at least one or two of them hatch if not all four. But I know lots could happen. I bought chick starter today, too.

Well I sure hope they do. I just looked into my hatcher----MANY sets of eyes looking at me----saying get me Out of here---LOL. I will move them to the brooder in the morning(day 22). Looks like about all the eggs have hatched but I really can not tell till I remove some chicks. They are So Cute----I just Smile every time a Batch hatches---when I shine the flash light in---they come towards the light and stick their heads through the vent holes in the trays looking at me---LOL. I am not looking at my book but I think I should have about 60 in this hatch.

One of my silkies went broody the first week of this month on 9 eggs. We had big temp swings through the entire incubation so I wasn't sure how the hatch would go. She wound up hatching 6 out of 9 with one dieting after hatch. She did have help from a frizzle who sit on the eggs also or just sit on her. After the first two hatched the frizzle kept them warm while the silkie stayed on the eggs.

So cute! My Black Austrolorp hen hatched 2 cream legbar boys last Thursday. This was her first time and she is proving to be a very dedicated momma. I have seen her get out of the nest and call to the babies but they just won't budge from the nest. What's you're experience with you're mamma? Is she getting her babies out yet?

Hi there, I just had a couple of surprise chicks hatch the other day. there mother was very determined to have baby's. she seems a good mother even though she's a Dominique. when she disappeared, I thought a fox had gotten her, but I later fond her in a crevice in the barn siting on a clutch of eggs. most of them were OLD, so she only ended up with two chicks. How are all your broodys dong?

I only got 3 broodies with chicks---they are doing good. My app 200 1 day to 3 week old chicks in the brooders are just eating and drinking----LOL

I haven't seen her take them out of the coop. Just checked on them and there are two peeps under the silkie and three under the frizzle. Very cold today and they just finished hatching last night so I don't expect them to roam around much today. Love seeing the little faces peeking out from under the moms.
