Broody Hen Thread!

I just lost my oldest mama hen last summer. She was 12+ years old. Hatched at least one batch every year. She died defending her chick.

Oh.....I'm sorry. That was a long time to have her.

I have been reading Hatching & Brooding your own chick by Gail Damerow. In the section that explains which breeds make better broodies, it says the the Chantecler is deferred. Can anyone explain this to me? Thank you.

Yikes!! I'm freezing down here in the 40's (well, it's warmed up now to 59, which is still very cold to me!), so I can't imagine having to go out in 20 degree weather. Brrrrr!!!!

So sorry to hear about you're hen. I'm already very attached to my broody mama and I haven't yet had her for a year.

I've posted on various threads with no luck, probably because most people highly value their broodys and aren't gonna ever part with them. Thanks everyone!

Emmm, i guees buying a broody hen is difficult!! Do oyu want to get her while she is broody or buy a broody breed??
