Broody Hen Thread!

Some of the chicks were out from mom and pecking around. She was still sitting. I left an egg under her until the rest in the incubator hatch. I moved the food closer and she stretched her neck to reach the food and showed the babies how to eat and put out bits for them that they eagerly took to it. I'm so excited she is being a good mom.

Thanks. She would love to peck my fingers off but as long as she is a good mom I can live with that. I can reach under my Barred Rocks when they are laying but not her unless I have gloves on. She will be a year old next month.

Do u think she will be more calm with her next batch if she has another?? I was hoping my broodies would be mean cuz we have cats and thought they would ruff them up a little and she does some times but not often . The don't even hiss at me or peck but I might get some game bantams and see if thy will mother some babies as r mean when it comes to mothering...

She was pretty standoffish even before she was broody. She doesn't pick on anybody else but nobody messes with her either. I'm kind of hoping she might learn to trust me. Of course every time I go out to see her I stick another chick under her. Who would trust someone who did that? Lol
