Broody Hen Thread!

I guess I just don't know if we leave momma to take care of everything. She is in (strangely enough) a covered litterbox in a separate section of the coop. I don't think chicks will be able to climb out, and do I need to put food and water for the babies inside the box. there isn't much room. I feel like these are dumb questions, but I really don't know anything except that I love my chickens. ;)

Can you post a pic of the 'nest'?

Maybe make sure the bedding is thick enough so they can reach the opening and build a little ramp on the outside like I needed to:

Good idea, or use a thick old towel and drape it into the nest box entrance. My broody uses an elevated plastic nest box and the opening is about 4-5 inches above the floor of the coop, I just put a heavy old towel at the entrance so it provides soft yet good traction for the tiny bantam babies to climb up/down over the rise. Even if they slip/fall they are safe.

Biggest worry is them getting out but NOT being able to climb back in, if mama is inside they could get too cold.

Your gonna have to wait and see on Friday. A few may have died but there should be a few left alive still

Also realize it is perfectly normal for the broody to sit tight in the box for a day or so after the chicks hatch. If she doesn't take them out after a day then bribing with a tasty dish of food will help, she will be very hungry.
