Broody Hen Thread!

Oops stupid autocorrect how long can a hen leave her eggs at a time

It depends on a whole lot of things. How strong the embryos are, what the temperature was when they were left, etc....

The eggs may not have been left that long, the broody could have gotten up later and then didn't go back to the same spot. Maybe the eggs were only left for an hour, if you didn't time it you can't be sure.

If you had candled the eggs a day later you would know if some are likely to hatch.

I will say every time I have moved a broody she has had a hard time finding her way back to her nest at first, usually when she got up to take her daily break.

I guess I just don't know if we leave momma to take care of everything. She is in (strangely enough) a covered litterbox in a separate section of the coop. I don't think chicks will be able to climb out, and do I need to put food and water for the babies inside the box. there isn't much room. I feel like these are dumb questions, but I really don't know anything except that I love my chickens. ;)
There really are NO dumb questions. We were all first time hatchers once.

I like Aarts and Sonyas suggestions on making the nest more chick friendly. I also like the idea of his horizontal water bottle. I just had to remove my hamster water bottle because it got the bedding wet. The broody kept tapping it I guess. Anyway, feel free to ask any questions you may have as things can come up. Oh, and good luck!

My chicken was about 2 weeks in on sitting one eggs and I moved her and she didn't sit on them for 5-6 hours and when I went to xheck on her and the eggs they were cold; I moved her back to where she was sitting and she took them in again they are due to hatch on Friday will everything be ok and will they end up hatching?

These arent dumb we all have asked these "dumb" questions when we first started. And I see people on here that have hatched for many years learn something new.
