Broody Hen Thread!

Please send good broody vibes my way. After my last broody killed most of her chicks I'm kind of freaked out about letting Diva hatch some eggs.

Good luck!!

I have a BLRW that went broody for the first time at 7 months and in the process of trying to move her her broodiness was broken. She went broody again at 10 months and hatched some chicks and raised them to 4 weeks then over night decided she was done with them. Now at 12 months she is broody again. I don't really mind and she only had to sit for 2 weeks with her others because I had incubator chicks started when she went broody. Is this kind of unusual? I plan to get her some silkie eggs. You think she'll keep
doing this every couple of months?

I think she'll keep doing it. You have a very reliable hen that some people would die for you lucky duck! I'm still waiting for one. Good Luck!!!

She is a fearsome gal too. I don't mess with her without gloves. I have two cream legbars that both went broody. The one that went first is currently raising chicks but the other broke when I moved her to my broody coop. I was really surprised because the whole process was done just like with my other two. I had promised my daughter some silkies so was frustrated when she quit on me but now that Anastasia is broody again we can still get some silkie eggs.

I have had 2 BSL's go broody, and they can be very determined.

Good luck and keep us posted (and tell her to vary her reading with some good literature too, maybe some Mozart playing in the background, to build those little baby chick brains as they grow)

...and welcome to the Broody Thread, and BYC. :welcome

Dear Lady of Camley,
She broke an egg (unbeknownst to us) and stunk up the henhouse. She abandoned the eggs and I had to toss them. The hen lost interest.

thanks for asking!

PS: I've encouraged her to read Mark Twain's classical stories but alas, she got her jollies from the National Enquirer. Ugh. And People magazine. No good. Oh dear.
