Broody Hen Thread!

So, this morning I found a skunk in the coop. The skunk is no more. After my broody who has been sitting on 15 eggs for 15 days had relaxed a bit, I checked under her to find only 1 egg and tons of egg shards!

She seems in pretty good condition and had "stolen" the golf balls from another nest and added them to her single egg. I removed the single egg and candled it and it didn't look like it was living. I went ahead and put some fertile eggs under her that I had saved.

Do you think this is okay? I don't want to stress her by having her set for 5 weeks straight but it seems like she was intent on continuing.

Thanks.

Just keep an eye on her weight.

I have spent the last 3 days reading this thread from start to finish and I can officially declare that my next chicken "project" will be getting a broody chicken and hatching some chicks! I have a few breeds that tend broody so I'm just going to cross my fingers and bide my time and hope that one day I can show you all broody pictures!

What breeds do you have?

I have 2 New Hampshires, 2 Araucanas, 3 EE, 1 Cukoo Maran, 1 White Leghorn, 1 Black Minorca, 1 Plymouth Barred Rock, 1 Silver Campine, and 2 Russian Orloffs. I think one of my Araucanas wants to be broody, she likes the egg boxes and I find a lot of her feathers in there, but she's not planted herself for days yet. Most of these guys are still pullets so I have awhile before they would be old enough to set. The New Hampshires are just a year now and the Araucanas and Leghorn are only 8 months old.

Leave some eggs in there and find out.

I have all the chicks I want for this year, I forgot to add that I have 25 red rangers brooding in my basement and when they are finished I think we will be done with babies til next spring. I need to get myself a rooster too, that's been in the plans for awhile. We'd love to have a little self sustaining situation going on here. I can't wait!

I'm pretty sure that a rooster will be easy to come by
