Broody Hen Thread!

Well out of 46 eggs total I bought over the internet from 2 diff sellers, I candled them and 31 are fertile and doing great at developing. Thats a great hatch rate for mailed in eggs! Too bad a certian color, none was fertile, BUT it happens. I have 3 different batchs hatching... Batch #1 is my own stock of 43 eggs with 5 chicks so far born. Batch #2 of 25 (internet eggs) 17 are fertile and batch #2 of 21, 15 are fertile. So With a total of 75 good eggs out of 89 eggs, This is a great beginning/hatch! And all done by my wonderful lil broody hens. (was 15 of them) NOW 12. Got to love them broodys!

Agreed! Got to love the good broody hens! Congrats on your great hatches :)

Silkie is going broody. She kicked my Cochin off the best and laid her egg and did want to move. So I put her on the other nest with 8 of her eggs. So my silkie and Cochin are happy now.

One of the hens has gone broody, and she is isolated in a (empty) duck coop. She's sitting on four eggs and my dad doesn't even know!

. Some of the eggs may have been handled roughly, and a few have been chilled for an hour or two on day 2. Are they still good?

HAHA! Once your dad finds out, you better act just as suprised as he...WHAT? BABY CHICKS?

I'd say they're still good. Mine got chilled for a whole night as my cochin stepped off her nest, I threw them in the bator when I found them(candled one and the embryo was completely still) and they hatched fine.

my white Chantecler, who went broody with ONE egg, hatched out 2 (out of 4 I put under her) on her own and has accepted 7 other little baby chicks over-night. So she is raising and teaching 9 babies now and doing a great job.

I moved my broody 2 nights ago to segregate her from the others. I was tired of all the eggs getting mixed up and one of the eggs broke a few days ago (thankfully not a developing one). I debated on whether I should kennel her in the coop or not but finally decided to get this kennel because the price was a steal! I can also use it in the future for injured hens or other things.

Its been colder than normal the last few days so I have that hay propped up to block any wind but still be able to get in as needed. She wasn't happy at first when I moved her because it was still a little bit light out, but once it got dark she ran back to the nest and has been sitting nicely ever since.

The eggs were due to hatch any day now, even as of yesterday. I sure hope she gets some babies from these. I would be so sad for her if it didn't work out.

How old can the chicks be before they're too old to bond with a mama? I have 2 week old chicks in the barn that I'm tempted to give her if these don't hatch, but would they be too old?

I double checked my dates and it looks like this is actually days 23 and 24 for her eggs. Isn't that too long? How long should I wait for them? It has been colder than normal this week with snow flurries and temps in the 30s. Would that affect their hatching?

. Well the 21 day mark is a perfect controlled condition I have had eggs 27 days under hens
