Broody Hen Thread!

Well, I check the eggs daily. I just have to wait until the broody gets up to to eat. I didn't notice it yesterday.. I don't know if the hen will let me get them because she's a very protective mother! Would they last for the last week? Or should I try to put was on them?

I have a brood cochin that has been sitting on eggs for the past 21 days. This is her first time and the eggs she is on are poo covered and nasty. What do you think the chances are that some will hatch. She started out with 8 eggs and she is now down to three. One ahe kicked out because it was bad. I have no clue where the other 4 went. Today should be the day of hatch. If they dont hatch i will get her a couple of chicks to see if she will take them in.

We snuck a couple of chicks under her last night and took out the nasty rotten eggs. She took to the chicks right away and is caring for them. We also gave her a bath before hand. She stunk pretty good. She may not be able to hatch them out but she is a loving mother.

How long will a hen stay broody? It's been two weeks but the eggs aren't developing. I want to put new fertile eggs under her but I'm afraid she won't sit for 21 days since she has been at it for 14 already. Thoughts?

  In my experience, my broody bantam will sit on her eggs, however long it takes for them to hatch, i had to replace her eggs a week into sitting, she carried on through until the new ones hatch, I would say that is probably the longest time i would keep her on there for, as their health does start to deteriorate the longer they are on the nest for, ie feather loss, pale wattles, weight loss, because of the lack of excercise etc....your broody may give up naturally if she knows the eggs aren't developing, mine usually kick them out....see how you feel, would she be able to endure a few more weeks without becoming poorly? It really is down to the health and vitality of your broody....

I have a white silkie hen that just got done with her older chicks that she hatched a couple months ago and she started to lay eggs again and I left them there because I wanted to put some in the incuabtor but since she just got done with her chicks and stuff I don't want her to go broody again till next spring and with fall around the corner I don't want her to stay broody since they don't eat/drink as much....so I was wandering? I have 4 chicks 1 easter egg mix and 3 bantam mix the EE mix is about 3 days and the bantys are about a week and 3 days so I was wandering if I put the chicks under her this early if she would accepted them yet because she showed interest int he clutch yesterday but didn't sit long and now today she's been sitting since this morning so I was wandering if she would accept?....thanks!

I have not posted here since page 76 but I had a second hen go broody! She's one of my other broody's daughters! The eggs are due to hatch on the 17th! 4 eggs!

I have eggs going on lock down the 17th and I have 4, too! Some of my white silkie eggs.
