Broody Hen Thread!

I like to leave things alone as much as possible as mom usually does a better job without my interference; however, accidents do happen, and if you've got a lot of eggs under her and really want to watch out for this hatch, it might be a good idea of check on things periodically (without hovering too much).

Lady of McCamley

She does have a lot of eggs, and that is why I was worried - the chick and pipped egg were both trapped between 5 or 6 eggs, and Red couldn't get them out. On my school lunch, I drove home and checked the best to make sure the pip from last night had hatched - it hadn't, but was still alive, so I peeled the membrane away (chipped away really, it was very dry everywhere). He was stuck to the membrane and couldn't move, so I got it all off him and he's now under mom fluffing up!
Happy end to a good day!

Well some breeds u can tell by wings if the wings feathers are all the same size and perfectly straight it's a male if the feathers are two different sizes and there is two different rows of feathers it's a female

I felt bad and put the eggs back and she has been on them ever since! Hopefully she only gets off to eat and drink, so the eggs and actually hatch!

I have some questions. My broody's chicks are almost 2 weeks old. I have them in a pen and extended it yesterday, today she got out (I have no idea how!) but stayed near her babies... which tells me she's ready to free roam with them. My question is, will her chicks be ok with 9 other chickens roaming the yard as well? 2 of them are mischievous males which terrorize my 5 week olds (all 13 of them are penned up in a movable run). I am concerned they might have their way with these new chicks. This is her first time brooding and she has 6 to look after.
