Broody Hen Thread!

So I had a chick hatch Friday. Then 2 more hatch Friday night or Saturday morning. She is still sitting on the clutch and the nest is up off the ground so they haven't left to get water yet. I am a bit worried! I put a bit of chick mash in the corner of the box but there is no room to put any water in the box safely. Should I just keep waiting or what to do? I expected her to leave the box to show them the water n food area

Hang a 1 liter bottle with a chicken nipple in it, my lil' chicks had the nipple waterer down day one! and it doesn't take up any floor space and won't spill! I have both types of waterer out in the run, and nipples in the brooder. I think my broody would have dehydrated to death for her determination to sit were it not for the nipple within reach of the nest! Good luck!

Hi. Our first time with broodie hen. We let her sit on the clutch. Shes a BLRW. Eggs are due to hatch Wednesday. One hatched this morning and 5 others are yet to hatch. She left nest with chick most of day. Coop temp stayed at about 80. We have now enclosed them. Is that ok?

Thank you. Unfortunately it would appear that TSC in Canada doesn't carry those nipples and I need one now. Even though its a DIY project I think I need to buy the nipple part

I think my broody is about ready to leave the chicks already. They'll be 4 weeks old on Wednesday. She started to do the submissive squat again today.

I went to the chicken coop this morning and I found I have another broody! She has 21 eggs and I can wait for them all to hatch! Its still such a long time!
Now I have 5 broodies!
1 Is in the chicken coop with 15 eggs!
2 The other is in the chicken coop with 21 eggs!
3 One is in the field with 16 eggs!
4 Is in the rabbit hutch with 19 eggs!
5 IS in the garden with 23 eggs!
So many eggs and the are all due in a 14 day period! Its going to be hard! But I will love it!!!

Sounds like my Molted java... She started doing that at between 3-4 weeks... By the 5th week the chicks were on their own.. They were raised within the flock and are doing great.. around 9 weeks old now and the Java is full on broody again

That's a lot of chicks lol... Do you worry they can all be covered??.. I have one sitting on 12 and I thought that was pushing it, she is a Java and pretty large... I also have an Acona (never supposed to go broody) that is sitting on 5... she is pretty small tho

I don't worry! I let my chickens be! I once had a hen who went broody on 31 eggs! All of them hatched! The poor mother couldn't cover them all but she made a plan!
I felt so sorry for her!
It was sooo cute to watch her try her best to cover them all!

Waiting for my first Broody :)
I have 5 hens (2 BO and 3 silkies?) 1 silkie roo. What are the chance they will all go Broody at the same time? I have so many questions about letting them hatch their eggs and I'm still waiting for them to lay lol
