Broody Hen Thread!

I can add boards to the ramp. I am afraid of them falling off the ramp. But if they can fly a bit that should not be a problem.

I will start looking around the yard tomorrow to check on dangers.

It shouldn't be a problem to make a brooder and put legs on it. And make it predator proof. It could be a bit lower than my coop......or I could have one of those emergency exits like airplanes have. They can slide down the chute and land on a pillow. Ok I'm tired and silly.....lol.

Thanks
:)

Yes, some times the weather can be a problem.

especially the cold rainy weather we have here. I have a hoop house I can use in that case. when I'm not using it for my bantams in the winter that is. but usually that's not a problem since most of my mama's go broody in the spring, except my surprise mama, I guess she just couldn't wait that long.

What a difference 5 weeks makes -- they fit *so* must better when they were first hatched, lol
Then: (see that tiny head poking out?)

Now:

Mama is getting to the point of being done with her motherly duties - the last few nights she has started out on the roost with the rest of the big birds. A few of the chicks have managed to get themselves up there too, but have been invited to leave when they snuggled up against the wrong hen - then the babies wander around the floor complaining until mama gives in and flies down to sleep with them in the corner she claimed as their's when she moved them out of the nest. I never get over how fast they grow!

That's so like my mama's! I have some who keep their chicks forever! It's so funny to see those big chicks trying to squeeze under mama. It's even funnier to see a bantam hen hatch out full size chicks.

Aww, all of those pics are so cute. I sure wish my Black Sex Link would go broody again. I'm incubating eggs for the first time and it sure seems a lot less stressful when they do it.

Haha so true! My bantam once hatched 15 (she was a hideaway....didn't know where she was) full size eggs!!!! It was soo cute to see her with all those babies!!~!!

Cute, cute, cute...love to see all the momma's with their chicks, big and small.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the over size fun. Here is a picture of my Silkie when she was still mothering some rather over-sized youngsters.
