Broody Hen Thread!

If you are able to spend some time in the coop with her I would open up her restriction while you are there to observe, if she comes off of the nest with the little ones then you can move her, if she sits tight then let her go and check her again in the morning or later this evening. Watch that there is no where for the little ones to get trapped away from the nest, they may start roaming after the first 24 hours and chicks are great at getting themselves stuck places they shouldn't be, or not being able to get back into the nest for some reason or another. Some chicks CAN fit through normal chicken wire, but they sure don't seem to know how to get back through the way they came. If you are using wire to restrict them it would need to be something along the lines of half inch hardware cloth....

Good advice Fisherlady...and ain't it the truth...it amazes me how the cute little dummies can get themselves into the silliest fixes...I've had them chirp frantically just around a half blind corner...uhmmm....walk three paces forward then to your left and you'll see mom. Had to remove a board which was screening the nest box in the main coop because one couldn't figure out how to get back to mom and nearly chilled to death.

Well, didn't recv all your replies until it was too late. I moved her at 2 a.m. under thought-out, egg, moving engineering process. Had a heating blanking warming inside cat kennel for a while in order to warm interior appropriately and timed everything down. Please remember, this hen is a doll. Very friendly and extremely docile. So, the move? Well, everyone is doing great as a peach soaking in moonshine on a hot summer day in Georgia. I am tickled to pieces. Have houdans and my E2's hatched and these chickies are very independent burgers and momma is fabulous. Thank you everyone for once again always being there when I needed you.

So glad it worked out well for you and the brood is happy. More pics when able please!

her side of the coop is about 4 feet long. I blocked right down the middle if coop. Also shut her side off.
Got home around 5:30, she had one more chick. I could see the egg shell. The chicks kinda came out from under her. I'm sure cause there was some light. All 7 are good! 3 eggs left to go. I remembered you had said Tuesday would be her date. With the give or take 24 hours. This gives me hope that we may just get 1-2 or all. Because she's has no intrest in moving! I examined her sized and no feces.

The 3 under her I REALLY want to hatch! They are from my favorite hens! I gave her 3 off each. With a 2/3 hatch and 1/3. I realize I have a good hatch rate already and am happy things are going good.

Please keep the info coming. Thank you!!
She will probably come off the nest today to find some feed for the chicks and her. Wishing You Lots of Luck!

Oh, wish me Luck---I got about 185 eggs in lock-down---they are due today, some were already hatched yesterday evening.

X2! I had a chick get stuck in some chicken wire once. I had to cut the chicken wire around it to get it out.

Do you all candle broody eggs? or just let them do their thing?

I don't candle my broodys eggs, unless I have to move them for some reason, in which case I might candle some of the eggs.
I'm wishing you luck!

Glad to hear your chicks are doing well! I hope your last three eggs hatch today.

Rarely, BUT keep in mind I set ALL my Broody hens with Fresh eggs---never allow one to set on eggs that I do not put under them. Then in about 2 days I move the broody--nest and all to a hatching pen. I feed and water her But not close to her nest---she has to get off the nest to eat and drink and do her business. I do Not Bother her at all---I do not look under her---I do Nothing at all till she comes off her nest with her chicks----then I clean up her nest and add fresh hay if needed. I had 33 broody hens that I set last season, had some more broody ones that I broke their broodiness. These broody hens(most were Game) hatched about 250 chicks.

Just set 3 Isbar and 2 Olive Egger (Isbar/Marans) eggs 3:30 pm today.

New broody "Queen Mum" took them in stride with the compulsory peck at my hand...lookin' good!

...21 days and counting.

Feels good to be "back in business" again.

Thank you! As one hatched last night and momma is getting Restless. She got off the two eggs just like PD-riverman said she would. One was hatching. Oh so cute! But worried me !! She started making the cackle noise tge roosters make. So with RD advice I hurried and got her grower feed and water. As soon as she watched me put in her section of coop she settled back on the last two eggs. I'm definitely moving her tonight!!! I'm hoping the last one is going to make it?! She seams like she's still willing to sit. So I will move the last egg to the broody box with her babies and her when I get home. I'm thinking 9/10 is a good hatch rate ?! It's my first so I'm not sure if this is beginners luck

I will be home in time to take some pictures and share. The only egg left is blue. Most of my chicks are black with 2 browns and 2 yellow. Here is a little view
