Broody Hen Thread!

Today is a happy but very sad day I found 3 chicks from my 1st brood in the duck pool. I had no idea I am very upset. I feel like the worst chicken owner

My second broody got off the nest today I could not get an accurate count though an it looks like my 3rd broodies eggs are hatching. I want to be excited but I cant because of the 3 dead baby chicks I found.

I am sorry for your loss.... little ones are infamous for finding places they shouldn't go... hatching eggs with broodies is a constant learning experience. Hopefully things go better for you from here on out.

Thank you so much it was rough seeing them like that I was devastated. I emptied the pool so it dose not happen again.

We hatch exclusively with broodies, and we do it mostly in the coop with the whole flock involved. Accidents can and do happen, many are a learning experience and we find we need to do something we missed before to reduce risks. Some are just inherent risks of raising within the flock (being stepped on or accidentally smothered in a nest).... but all are upsetting to say the least.... it is amazing how attached you can get to a ball of fluff in just a short time!

I am glad you were able to post about it here to possibly help others reduce their risks, your sad experience may help someone else....

I know I like hatching with broodies they do all the work and its fun watching the mother hen teach and protect her little chickies. And the flock is very much involved as well.

Oh no!! I'm so sorry. That just happened to me too, my first broody hatch. It is so hard to keep ahead of how they can get into trouble! :'(

Princess's remaining baby is now coming up on a week old. I have been keeping them in the little broody pen. How soon should I let them out into the flock?

Mine went out at 1 day old. But I free range everything right now and she is the one who decided to go back to the coop...
