Broody Hen Thread!

I have never heard of that. Is it suppose to float?

Quote: Actually, I was thinking about it being too old to eat....if it floats it's probably 'bad'.

but yes water candling for the wiggle can work..depends on how long it has been sat upon by a broody.
Ducks take 28 days (I think)

I must have missed the context of the question, or it wasn't explained properly.

My light brahma went broody at the beginning of the month. On June 3 I gave her a dozen eggs from my flock to sit on. About a week and a half ago one of the eggs cracked. I cleaned it up as best I could. On Monday morning the remaining eggs started to hatch. Throughout the day 10 of the peeps hatched. Today for the first time the momma stepped off the nest. I was holding out hope for that last egg -- but now that she left it in the nest alone I am doubtful that it is going to hatch. This only the second time I have done this. Last fall she sat on 5 eggs and all five hatched. How long should I leave the last egg in he nest?

Hey ya'll I was just wondering if any of you would happen to know how old this duck egg is.
Welcome. You ask a question here but gave no details. If this egg is a egg you found----I would for sure not eat it----which is why some one ask if it will float if you put it in water. If its a egg that is being incubated then it is due to hatch soon. You gotta give us some details.

Thank you for your thoughts. Can't say I feel great. I had to put my rooster down today. He was nine, but quite healthy untill all of this happened. I lost his hen who was also nine in February. She had a tumor on her jaw. I actually had him x-rayed and they found a big mass. Now I'm wondering if it's Marek's - hens aren't laying, or eating, had some diarrhea, roo had the mass, not eating, bumble foot, shaking his head sometimes. I wondered about his vision. The vet opened him up today to investigate. I'll talk with him tomorrow. I wonder if it's related to my little hen's jaw tumor. They are/were? such a sweet little bunch of birds, really cute too. I don't know why I am/was so attached to them. They were a real stress reliever and my little friends I seriously enjoyed hanging out with. It's just sad.

I'll try the separation - I don't have another secure coop, but I could put her in the basement. It's very cool there and I can make her quite comfortable. Unfortunately it may not matter, depending on what the vet finds. My horse as it turns out will likely be fine with daily treatment for about two weeks. What I thought was her tendon, was not. Thank god. And yes, I am getting the water checked ASAP because without the filtration system I DO have lots of manganese and iron. And anyway, it's been way too long since I had it checked. Can't believe I don't do it annually.
Aw that just sucks. I am so sorry you had to do that.

We do get attached to these little guys....It is heart breaking to lose them. Let us know what the vet says tomorrow. Here is a big hug for you.

Well I decided just to go for it and took them out of the cage they were in and set them on the ground to go where they would. I set the nesting box, food and water out for them and will see where they head at bed time. They seem to be doing ok and all the biggies are under the bushes pecking around.

Day 22?

I couldn't resist, peeked under Sunfloweer this am, nothing. I'm figuring on them having died and where I can score some day olds...

Tonight...one tiny, miniscule - PIP!

EEEEEEeeeeeeeee.

ETA:

Separate pen is ready in case they hatch...

Neighbors pulling out of there driveway surely caught me in their headlights, crouched down, listening to the wall of the coop, next to where the nest box is.... Mortified
