Broody Hen Thread!

Good, I'm glad all is working out. I only free range for an hour or so before dark, and only if I'm home to keep an eye on the flock. They don't get to wander around all day. Predators and neighbors....got to protect the flock from predators and protect the neighbors from the flock. With only an hour before going to roost, they don't get far from the coop and I rarely have to hunt down any stragglers...usually the straggler will be one of the youngsters....who hasn't figured out that it's time to go to bed! Typical!

LOL! Yup.
I used to do the same thing. I only free ranged in the evening when I was outside with them. Then, I realize that I was wasting my time. I won't get into why, but now they free range all day.

I want to "break" a broody I have. I know the prescribed method is a wire bottomed cage.
What dimentions wire?
seems like hardware cloth would not let poop fall through, so something like 3/4" by 3/4" or what works good and is safe for the hen?

I do not know the actual dimensions, but I know that a dog crate is popular.

She has two babies! And one egg remaining but the first two hatchlings are days ahead of schedule so I won't give up hope yet. The babies are moving around quite a bit and pop out from underneath Mama quite often. I am hoping she gives us the full show and brings them out tomorrow.
She has turned into a fire breathing dragon though. I offered her a drink of water and she almost took my hand off! Moving the food and water dishes with salad tongs for the time being.

I have one that likes to take her chicks into one of the nesting boxes at night. If I have not gathered eggs before they go to bed I have to think real hard about how bad I want those 2 or 3 eggs that may be under her.
