Okay so question for those who are experienced with broodys! Since mama just had her babies, she needs to move out of the breeder cage and go into a bigger pen to raise her chicks for at least 2 weeks ( untill the farm swap where I intend to sell most )....
Question : I have 7 chicks and 2 ducklings ( 4-7 weeks old ) that have outgrown the brooder box. Can I put them all into a pen together with broody where they could all use a heat lamp still and eat the same food? or will broody be "too protective"? I need the brooder box by wednesday since I have a batch in the bator due then. So do I put them together or build a pen this weekend?

It depends on the hen. She may be protective and hurt the older chicks, or they may get along fine. I would suggest putting her and the chicks in the pen, but separate them from the older chicks by chicken wire and see how they react. Oh, and I've noticed that there have been a lot of questions about broody hen care. I tried to cover caring for broody hens in post 231 on page 24 so some of the answers might be found there. By the way, this morning I went out and my BO hen had a nest full of chicks!
Now it's my turn to ask a question:
How do you tell the gender of a black breasted OEGB chick?
Saw another damp "fresh one" this am! That brings the total up to 8 fuzzies that I know of...I have this broody mama plus a bantam broody plus another I was able to break! The bantam wont give up....3 weeks of sitting on nothing and she about kills you anytime you go near her lol.
I was hoping that i would get a broodie but not this soon. Im getting 3 ameraucanas this weekend and was using my brooder for them BUT i guess that plan is messed up.
I guess i will use my brooder for them for a week or so then put her in there but i want to get the eggs under her tomorrow since she has been broodie for 2 days now.
Here is the new brooder i made, just finished it today. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6525346#p6525346
