A couple days ago one of my hens with a large brood of 20 chicks now pushing 5-weeks old encountered the larger American Bullfrog that has a home range centered on watering trough at NE corner of barn. The frog gets in and out of the trough at least a couple times each day. It hunts gravel area on E side of barn. Part of what frog eats appears to be mice and possibly even English House Sparrows. Generally the hens with broods are kept in elevated rabbit cages until about 5:30 PM when they are released. This observation involves the hen described above encountering the frog and somehow making it move away. She produced a sound very similar to that when dealing with a large snake. She then slowly entered heavy weeds all fluffed with chicks flanker her. She may have even pecked at the frog. Frog large enough to eat a chick if it had a chance. Frog moved away holding head down between hops.

This is the mouse eating beast that riles hens with chicks. He also eats the Gray Tree Frog froglets as they lose their tails. Photograph is of him hanging on edge after taking a dip. I wish I new more about what he does when outside the trough. I may try to tame him so he will let me follow. Kids would get a kick out of that.
