Please help! I have a broody Jersey giant hen. Bless her....this is the second summer she has tried to hatch. Today two eggs started pipping....i went to check and one had died inside the egg...the other had hatched out under the hen, but was laying dead a foot away from the mother hen. It seems it had died right after hatching. She is separate in a maturnity coop! What are we doing wrong??? I want her to have some chicks!?

Have you done this? I was thinking to do that because she is sitting on eggs still....wasn’t sure if she’d take to them...
are they eggs from the current batch? Have you candled?
No, mine usually hatch their eggs fine or if they don’t hatch they go back to normal chicken behavior. Many people do it. Usually at night they swap eggs for chicks.

It's a common suggestion on here and seems to work quite well. I haven't personally done it, but I'm sure people will pop up on here with their success stories. Just go in there at night and slip them under her. Try and minimize the amount of light you need while doing it. You don't want to make a big production of it. Think sneaky.

For sure! I tried calling the feed store but they don’t have any really young ones....so the challenge will be finding them! Thanks again!

Is there any wounds on the dead chicks to Indicate that your broody attacked them? If so, be on alert if you do do put chicks under her.....if you witness any aggression from her, you will need to have a brooder set up and ready. Good luck!

Not that I could see....there was one spot of blood on its bottom but I assumed that could have been from hatching?
