Broody hen

One of my Golden Campine hens is setting on 8 eggs. I have 5 campine eggs and 3 blue andalusian eggs under her. Neither of these breeds is known for broodiness. Wish me luck!

And I am with ya, went up to feed last night and my black bantam faverolle is setting on 7 eggs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also have 8 eggs in the bator.....

Good luck! Broody hens hatching out their own chicks are amazing. We have three hens with three batches of newly hatched chicks right now, and they are all so adorable. When I went to check on them this morning, one hen had five sets of eyes on her back! The chicks were in her "wing pits" and had stuck their little heads up through her feathers to look at me. Oh, to have a camera handy!

I have a fairly old (3-4 yrs) EE mix hen who just went broody again. I let her hatch one egg last year, but after a year on BYC I'm braver now and I let her have five. They'll be mutts, but who cares... they're chickens! Hopefully they won't all be roosters. My other hens are all black sex-links, and I have two roosters, a buff rock and a mutt, so God only knows what these chooks will look like. I love to watch hens raise their chicks.

I also love watching mamma hens with their babies!! SO PRECIOUS, Nothing better! I really don't need the babies, but

So far I've lost two of the five eggs my hen was sitting on. One spoiled & exploded; fortunately it was stuck to her breast feathers and she was off the nest when it popped so it didn't stink up the broody nest. The other one was developing, but somehow she broke it; the top side was crushed downward. No other hens can get to her so she must have rolled it funny or something. Anyway, she's got three still under her and due to hatch around the 28th.
