I took my little Cochin hen out of the box today and put her in a large coop where she couldn't sit. She was not happy. I've done it for a few days in a row and usually stop and get over it. Don't let her get too thin please.

Hi John. It has been awhile since your post here. I have been looking at broody hen threads most of the day and I have to say I really agree with you. I have an 8month old hen who went broody of Feb 16th. She is my first since in the 4yrs I have been raising my hens. I'm excited about it and thus, I began looking on BYC to see if anyone has ever given their broody a few 1 week old chicks. I do not have a rooster...do not want a rooster....but that should not preclude my big girl raising some babies. Do you have any suggestions John?

I have a metal dog cage that I put my broody hens in . I elevate it off the groung and put them in it overnight.Three nights of cool air under them knocks the broodiness out of them.I let them roam during the day and don't let them near the nesting boxes.

At a week old, the chicks are too old for them to bond with the hen, in most cases.Usually about 2 days is the limit.........Pop

I have a cockerel but i really think that hes rather not mating the hens or is infertile, so i buy some eggs online and use them and put a few of my own under , i never want to risk buying day old chicks incase the chicken wont accept them
