Exactly. I want some of my alphas bloodline but I also want to learn. I know better how to set up the brooding area. Now I need to learn what else I don't know.

Update. I have a total of 43 eggs. Number 42 was a guilt trip gift to the broody when I locked her up. I had 2 ceramic eggs to make sure she would set for me and as I closed everyone in the the night there was a final egg for the day so I gave it to her about 12 hours before the rest and turning on the incubator. 43 was my mother's idea. She brought in some eggs and said let's set this EE one too. So there is about 8 hrs late on that 1. Both of those ended up in the incubator.

I planned on giving 10 to my broody. I gave her breakfast and she got up to eat. While she was up I showed her the bounty of eggs and quickly traded. I left her with 9 plus # 42 now numbered. Came back 15 minutes later to 2 eggs just barely in her reach and her not trying to get them. I could see the smallest of slivers of egg under her wing. I asked if she had room and slowly reached for them. She didn't try and make a move for them and didn't even swear at me. Guess I have an 8 egg chicken!

She moved well to the broody coop. She stands up when her nest is flying and promply sits back down when it stops moving. Last I saw her she had herself half covered in straw and looked more like a teapot cosy then a real chicken.

Yes I know this is not normal broody behavior but she is a special chicken. Hester will die of old age as long as she keeps brooding a couple clutches a year for me. I seriously doubt I will ever see another egg from her in my fridge. She goes from chicks to "My eggs" in about 1 week. She also gets special treats when she is brooding scrambled eggs, meat loaf, etc with a small side of scratch.

Well im pretty sure I'm screwed. I have no plan for chicks beyond giving a few to my broody hen so she can care for a "100% hatch".
Candled today and here is my inexpert results.
8 with the broody hen
1 had an unnoticed hole in the narrow end if the shell so it was discarded.
6 EE or RIR too dark to see anything
3 probably never started no visible veins (left in the incubator for now)
25 with veins!
So out of 43 I have 4 dead, 14 unknown and 25 growing. That's A definite 58% possible 90% potential success rate.

I only know what to do with 8 babies. I will begin taking suggestions now. I don't have a place in my house for them to grow and the broody coop is uninsulated but can have power. I only have 1 broody hen. I marked the rest of the Buff Orpington and discovered they were each taking turns sitting and being pissy with me. So I have a coop full of pissy mildly broody chickens but none that could hatch chicks on their own.

Oh and here is a pic on my "tea cozy chicken" Hester

She is about 20 months. She was part of my first chicken purchase and started laying the second morning she woke up here. They said she was 6 months old and I got her the end of October last year.
