Broody is like the FLU!

I think we've moved a bit off topic. :)

@Kfults, did you get your question answered? Do you need any info on a good broody breaker setup?
I was just making a comment.... I locked her in a medium dog crate- I guess I didn’t latch the side door well enough, she escaped back to the nest. I replaced her. I have the dog crate raised so I placed it upside down so she had the smaller wire squares to stand on, so the top would have the larger 4inch squares- well she somehow jumped and squeezed out of the 4 inch square- escaped through the top-back to the nest. I replaced her and placed a plastic cover over the top.... well she jumped and knocked the cover off somehow and escaped through the top again and is back in the nest! I am tired and will start over in the am! I am afraid she will hurt herself trying to escape! She is one determined girl! :thChicken 3- Me 0

Ahem.... Sorry, I laugh because I know your pain. Chickens can be determined little boogers. I don't blame you for giving up for the night.

I would put the crate right-side up with the bare tray under her so she can't escape. A bare tray should work. You could also line it with cardboard so it is easier to clean. It should work in a few days. If she isn't cured in 3-4 days, she is really badly broody and you may just have to figure out a wire bottom that will contain her.

I laughed too and I apologise. I'll be on your side of the fence very soon karma will sort me out no worries. :caf

Exactly what I do. I've also tried that bit of putting the cage upside down an place that plastic floor on the top. The trick here is to weight it down. I put bricks along the perimeter and at least one in the middle. But frankly, just leave it upside right with the floor in place. You can raise the cage with two 2x4s underneath like runners .it will keep the floor cool which will cool off your overheated broody.

Thanks!

Have read of this happening.
It is kind of funny, would be great to have hidden vid to see just HTH do they DO that!
But not so funny if it's happening to you...and true the bird could hurt itself...hope you figure out how to make it work. Can help to crate bird out of sight of nests.

I added 1x2 14ga cage wire to the bottom of all 4 of my folding crates.
It's kinda tedious, but well worth it in the long run because then you can use the tray inside crate or underneath crate or not at all.
If you look closely at the pic you can see how it's installed:

Thank you! I will have to do this, once I am out this particular situation. LOL
Today is sunshine temp 60s and a nice day so I set my kennel right side up in my secure chicken yard over an area with grass....with water and food plus scrambled egg. She is now in said cage unable to get out and seems ok. The other girls want her scrambled egg so they are around her, hoping cool ground, fresh air and sunshine will help! Will keep her in cage tonight
