I have a BO hen that is notorious for pecking at her eggs as soon as they start chirping. Now I will only let her sit on them for a couple of weeks, if that long, before I pull them from her to give to another broody if I have one. If I don't have one, then I don't let her sit at all. I'll have my incubator up and running soon so I won't have to let her sit anymore. She'll also kill any other newly or just about to hatch chicks if given the chance.

Oh no thats not good. I think mine was either just hungry or the chick was weak or sick and maybe she knew so she ate it.I

I see two pips so far

She killed three more new ones but they were hatched and this time i think she crushed them because they were out of the shell and still wet but i honestly think she crushed them. I think that those were by accident though and i see another egg that looks like she crushed it too but im going to wait and see what happens to it i dont know if its dead or alive and then there is one more that is alive and its peeping inside the egg. The chick that hatched from yesterday is still alive somehow so i took it and put it under a heat lamp so she doesnt crush it by accident. Is this a common thing for first time brppdys? Or is mine just not a good broody? Now i dont know if i should let her hatch anymore...

Did you mention what breed she is? And what breed are the chicks?
I had a group of bantam Orpingtons that crushed a chick, but I think it was because 2 or 3 hens were crowded in the box. I don’t think I’ve ever had a single accidentally kill one.

You will always have the choice of whether to give her another chance at a later date, or never let her brood again. I usually give them a second chance.
Best wishes for the current chicks :)

Is she alone or with other chickens? I had 2 silkie hens that would fight over the eggs, steal them from each other, kill the babies... they were a mess... after they killed the babies we stopped hatching with them and got an incubator.

The chicken and chicks are buff orpingtons but not a bantam and no she is alone in a dog house and blocked off from the rest of the chickens. im not sure how she crushed the chicks that hatched but not the single one that hatched yesterday. I just feel bad for her because after the very first chick that she killed shes been being a good mom so far except for the chicks that she crushed by accident.

I've read the it is very common for first time broodies. I think they just become so focused on protecting their eggs that they don't understand that those eggs will eventually hatch baby chicks. It's almost as if they think that the chicks crushed their eggs
