Broody killed her chick

I just checked her again and the chick hatched and the chick that is in the egg that she crushed is still alive i see it breathing inside the egg but i dont hear it chirping yet. Do you think i should take the chicks and keep them to raise or should i just let her keep them once the last chick hatches.

Im just going to take the chicks and give her a chance some other time. I wish it didnt go like this but i rather have chicks be alive than dead. Im going to have to get her unbroody though once this last chick hatches.

Some make great mothers, some great sitters but not good hatchers, and some are just great all around. Given the circumstances, I would pull them. Like you said, a healthy chick is better than a dead chick no matter how you look at it.

yes exactly! All three are doing good but ive never had day old chicks before and they are so much quieter than three day olds from the hatcheries. They just want to sleep sleep sleep its actually quite nice :)

I usually pull mine from the broody on the 2nd day if necessary. That gives them a chance to really dry well. You'll of course have to teach them to eat and drink just as you would any other chicks.

yes the two that hatched today are almost dry and i showed them the water and i put some crumble down for them and they already started pecking at it.

Not that unlikely. My broody Serama is a great sitter and Hatcher. I started finding dead chicks in her enclosure abt a week after hatch. 2 one day, 2 the next. Walked in on 3rd day to her pecking ones back (it died shortly after I removed them), and another dead. Inspected remaining chicks and they all had wounds from her beak on their backs. Some are just not good mamas.
I've got them inside to cooperate and for treatment now. Antibiotics on their wounds, nutridrench in their water. Warmth and rest.
Now who's the good mama Rosa?!!!!

I just feel a little nervous that she might do it to the others. But maybe something could have been wrong sense it is only day 19 and they are buff orps along with the mom. It has started to rain yesterday on and off same for today so it is very humid out. I just wonder if this might be the problem?
Do any other chickens have access to her and her nest? If so, check for injuries. That blood on her beak may not be the chick's, it might be from defending her babies from another bird ... or a small predator.

I had a broody hen sitting on 6 eggs. She did a great job sitting on them. The first one hatch while I was at work. It was dry when I got home. Every time it tried to peak out from under the hen, she would peck it. I thought she was keeping under her and didn't want to interfere any more than necessary. When checked on them again, the chick was under the hen, but all the way in the back of the nest. Still alive at that point, but she never opened her eyes again. :(

When I went back out to check on the eggs, another one had hatched. The hen would stand up, look at the chick, peck it, and then sit back down. I went inside and put together the brooder and heat plate. When I came back out, the chick was in the same place the first chick was. I took the chick inside and put it in the brooder. After that, I just kept checking on the eggs and pulled the chicks out as soon as they broke free of the egg. She was ready to re-join the flock the next morning like nothing had happened. I now have 5 5-week old chicks in my spare room. :jumpy
