So we are into our second week with a broody Barred Rock mama. She has 9 marked eggs and is all settled into her own private suite. This morning when I checked on her she had pushed 3 of the eggs out from under her. They are cold to the touch, I cannot see much candling them, just odd shaped darkness (they are all brown eggs) Do hens sometimes do this? This is my first time with a broody. Should I warm them and give them back to her or is this too late? Another question... We have a seemingly active Rooster (and 6 hens) but our eggs don't always show the fertilization sign. Do all fertilized eggs always show the little red spot? Thanks for your help!!!

Thanks for those great pics Alice!!! I had heard of the 'bulls eye' but I thought it had to be red! Yay! That means that most of the eggs I have looked at are fertile.

Hens will get rid of eggs that they KNOW will not hatch for whatever reason. They know what they are doing. If she rejected them, I would toss them.
