Hatching is going slow. So far since this morning, four are out, one is trying and several more have pipped. Wish they would hurry.

Kuntrygirl, how did you get so many go broody? Something in the water?

A broody turkey is soooooo dangerous. My turkey did a matrix, 3D, slow motion, Karate Kid Side kick move on me while attacking me and I was done after that. I'm convinced that you DON'T mess with a turkey.

I wish I could tell you how so many go broody but I can't. I don't know if it's because of the great Louisiana weather down here, the acre of land that they have to free range on every day (all day long) or the competition between 60 hens to see who can be the first to hatch babies. I wish I knew so that I could stop doing it. I'm sure that I do the same thing that everyone else does that has chickens. They eat laying pellets every day. They get treats like vegetables, fruit, bread and every piece of left over table scraps. Oh, I can't forget the cat food they sneak and get that's in the garage. It's fun at first when you have a few but when it gets to the number that I have, it's just too many and too much work. I guess it's my fault because I can break the broodiness up but I just can't get up enough nerve to disturb them in that way. I would feel guilty about that. If anymore go broody, I will jump off of the barn.

My update: Broody Blue Jersey Giant hen sat on 16 eggs. She threw one out early on, 3 others were clear, 1 pipped and died, 8 chicks live and chirping, 1 pip, and 2 that I candled really early this morning (dark outside and in the rain) that are dark but hard to tell, but no chirping so who knows. She is still on the eggs so, maybe by later today, I'll know the final count.
The 3 that were clear, and the one she threw out came from one hen. And of course, this is the one that I wanted the most.

Betty, my bantam cochin, has pulled out every feather on her breast and has an attitude that makes the other two girls seem tame.

With her being a bantam, how many eggs can she fit underneath her comfortably? She's stolen about 8 from the other two girls and doesn't seem like she's uncomfortable, but she's really having to flatten and pancake to fit them all underneath. So, now we have one started on the 10th, one on the 12th and one on the 22nd. Wow, we're going to have SO many fuzzies!!!
