Broody Olivia, Day 19 *UPDATE-HATCH! a Dilemma, sort of..

Actually, as far as Olivia is concerned, I'm considering something and I need input from others with more broody hen experience.
Since tomorrow is Day 20 for her one egg, what if I move her and that egg after dark tonight, and, at the same time, slip the two GLW chickies underneath her? She was dead set on not staying on that nest in the broody pen before, but would thinking her chicks are hatching "anchor" her to the nest and would she most likely continue to sit that one egg till it hatches, even if that doesn't happen till Saturday? What say you experts?

speckledhen, I have a secret that I have been keeping from all of my BYC friends, but this warrants me telling. I took 27 duck eggs out of the fridge, let them warm up & put them in the bator. Some of these eggs had been in the fridge for more than a week. I had to remove 3, because they did not develop. I am on day 15 and I have 25 wiggly little ducklings in those eggs, as of the last candling, which was Tuesday night.

I know that of those that have done the math, 27 - 3 = 24, think that I do not know how to subtract. Well, one egg looks to have 2 babies inside of it. One on each side of the shell, just wiggling around whenever I candle it. BTW, I didn't tell before, because I knew that some would say that I was wasting my time trying to hatch eggs out of the fridge. I wanted to see what would happen, before letting anyone know....lol

babyboy1_mom, how awesome for you! You just never know, do you? Crossing fingers for a great hatch for you.
Well, we may try the move with Miss Livvie tonight, even though it's raining and yucky out. I'd love her to get these two little cuties under her and if that will make her stay put in the broody pen till that egg hatches, I wont have to worry about her in the main coop anymore. Thanks, Lee.

I am sending good vibes your way for you little eggs and your broody to accept the little chicks.

Good luck with the move and the hatching!

Is there any chance that Zane may have more eggs that he fathered there? You could put them in the bator with the other one. There have been a few theads on here where people have sucessfully incubated store bought fertile refridgerated eggs.

No, I think that was probably the last one. He didn't get lucky with too many girls here, just Charlotte, Meg and the PoufyHead sisters. Anyway, I really am going to be so overloaded with babies by the time I incubate next month's chicks and I honestly dont want alot of crosses. Zane never mated the Barred Rock hens, so a cross is all I'd get from him.

We did it! We moved Livvie and put the two babies under her wing. When DH went to check them to be sure they were okay, she pecked him, something she's never done. Maybe that's a good sign, her being protective like that!

Now, let's hope she sits on that egg for the extra day it will take it to hatch.
