Broody or not Broody?

This sounds similar to when my frizzle started being broody. She wouldn't screetch or even cluck when she was of the nest but after a few days she got the hang of it and sqwarks when i come near her and she is always on the nest. Wait a few days and you will see.
But on the other hand i have a RIR broody who never gets of the nest (about twice a week maybe). and she is a mean broody.

Broody

two broodies

Non-broody-the non-broody hen usually has her tail sticking up like this one when in the nest.
She'll bob her tail as she pushes the egg out.

I've even had a non-broody peck my hand

The hen in the middle is doing the 'broody march'-all fuzzed up and clucking repeatedly. Note how the hen in front is deferring to her.

See how Ms. Broody nails the intrusive hen behind her. She maintains her fluffed appearance during the attack.

Non-broody hens who rather roost on a support board than the actual roost.

This non-broody hen is waiting her turn to lay in her favorite box. Note the difference of expression as compared to the first photo.

Hi, Cluckcluckluke!

Well, since poor Cuddles, the Rooster, has gone, Book-Book, my Light Sussex, has started making her own proud egg-laying declarations in her favourite nest. If I oversleep and am late letting them out, when she hears me letting the dogs out, she lets me know that she is not impressed! The sound is so similar to her egg-laying declaration, that I'm never sure whether she's telling me off or just laying an egg. Then, when I get nearer, if I can see her head in the coop window, I get my answer! Lol!

As regards mine showing signs of broodiness, not as yet. Book-Book (26 wks old) is the only one laying at the moment, but the Wyandotte/Maran-Xs should be laying their eggs soon as they're around 20 wks old now. Count down!Book-Book is not much of a talker. She only softly Book-books at me when I'm holding her and stroking her.

Re your RIR Broody, at least you know (if you have a Rooster) that she'll be a good protector of her young! I have a friend who has RIR and his RIR Rooster can be quite aggressive which fits their breed from what I hear. Maybe the hens can be similar in temperament as well?

Well, i wouldn't impressed either if I was left waiting

Hens don't need roosters to lay or go broody. I have had over 8 broody's this summer without a single rooster in their presence
I don't know a lot about RIR's but mine is a bantam and I've been told that almost all bantam breeds are good broody's, so i hope she does well with her chicks as here sister (another RIR bantam) was a terrible mum she only hatched 2 from 5 and then let them both die

. So i hope people are right when they say "it all depends on the individual not the breed."
I would say as a very first time mum (in he case of your hen- Book book.) that she wont show all the sings of broody because.. well she doesn't really know what she's doing, shes only running on instinct, I don't have a single experienced mum as my flock is all fairly young so all my broody's have acted quite differently to each other.
I think you will just have to see, but theoldchick has put up some very helpful information that i agree with 100%.
Good luck.

Oh. My. Goodness. ChickyChook, those new fuzzywuzzies are SO cute! They look so fancy... I would have to photograph them eating out of a crystal dish or pretty china... :) or nesting in a pretty vintage hat box! You might get a kick out of looking at this link... Fancy Coop

Thanks for putting the "

Well, I suppose "theoldchick" being a Flock Master, should know what they're talking about! :) It certainly all makes sense what theoldchick is saying. I'll have to take a closer look as to what he/she has posted elsewhere. Don't you love that first photo! The look on her face! "You come any nearer or even TRY to touch me, and I'll have you for dinner!!" Lol! I've never seen a look on a chook like that before!

About your RIR bantam. How sad! It's like with humans, I suppose. What do they say, "Don't tar a person with the same feathers!" Oh my Gosh! Talk about a accidental link (forgotten the word for it! Duh!).

As regards Book-Book, yes. I will just have to see. They say Light Sussex hens can become quite broody, usually, but if it is an individual thing, well, I suppose one can never really know.

Thanks for your post!

Thank you! Lol! I rather like your photography ideas! Don't have a lot of time to be able to do that at the moment.... but you never know! Lol! No. Not a professional photographer as you can tell by the photos. Just someone who likes taking photos with her camera or her mobile. My eyes aren't so good any more, so it's... "Let's see. Everything's slightly blurry without my glasses, but if I make the centre focus here....... and take as many shots as I can. Well, I can delete the really blurry ones and just keep the reasonably good ones after I've transferred them to the computer!" Seems to work reasonably well! Lol!

Loved the link! How delightfful! Makes me want to hurry up and finish making the roof for my third tractor coop, put the window frames in, slide in the shutters and, finally, paint my poor coop! Got a few personal family things getting in the way at the moment. One is still a Mum even when they're don't live at home any more!

My daughter-in-law doesn't sew and has just had a beautiful daughter the other week. So, it's up to me to sew the cuffs on my son's new work trousers for his new upcoming job. All five pairs! No, not really complaining! Matty's only just had the baby so I wouldn't expect her to anyway! I did teach my son to sew, but he has his hands full with his beautiful daughter, Lilah, and being as supportive as he can for Matty. She's having a few problems adjusting as a new Mum. We're all different as to how we handle things aren't we. There's other stuff going on, but we're in Chicken Land!!!!!! Ta dah! And I find this a delightful relaxing break to talk to all you guys! At least, I know you're not going to be bored with my talk about my animals and chickens! In Facebook, I only got a couple of hits from my friends (the animal lover ones, of course!) when I shared about my chickens and their pics! Backyard Chickens...... You're a blessing!
You're right. This is not a hen! Just my first grand-daughter, newly born.

My son and his first daughter:

Nania (me) and Lilah: We're funny looking chooks, huh! Lol! I'm just a proud Grandmother! Can't help myself! Tee hee!
