Hi,
I have a RP turkey hen who has been laying on eggs for about three, almost four, weeks. In one of the rare moments, I discovered her off the nest and decided to check on the eggs. Well she had other plans. As soon as she saw me, she marched right back to her nest and I was only able to get a glance. I spotted at least three to four broken and crushed egg shells, and only saw one whole egg before she laid back down on them. Before today (about 1.5 weeks ago), I was able to see at least 8-9 eggs on the nest, so there are at most 5-6 eggs left. But like I said I couldn't see very well. There is also a very bad smell from the nest, and now I know why (before I thought it was because the inside pen needed to be cleaned out). How do I get her to stop being broody? I am beginning to think that I should save the eggs that I can that are left before they get crushed too. Her interactions with the eggs before have been very gentle and protective, so I am kind of surprised that this happened. It is her first time laying on eggs though. Should I force her off the nest? I suppose I should to at very least clean it out. Any tips on how to handle her? She likes to peck when I get too close.

I took her off the nest and started cleaning it. There were no whole eggs left, all smushed :( And the smell of the nest was just awful. It's safe to say that I will take any eggs she lays in the future away from her.

One person said not to touch the nest or the eggs for weeks. But we have been so nosey that we are in there every other day. And it's a good thing too. Our hens have smashed 1/2 the eggs they were on. So cleaning has been a big issue.:sick
I finally took the advice and rebuilt the nest with layers of wood chips, straw, then wood chips to keep the eggs in a cushy spot where they were less likey to get broke. Plus we removed one hen. The 2 together were fighting over the eggs and rolling them back and forth and breaking them. Then one just ate one for no reason. And another pecked open a rotten one.:hmm
We have even taken the hens off the nest knowing the eggs would hatch any minute. Just use leather gloves and a thick long sleeve jacket. It is a 2 person job. I tried to have a peek alone and got a blood blister from being pecked so hard.
You can break her from booding or try again with a nest build by you? But if she has been sitting for a long time it might not be healthy to let her keep at it.
