Hi,
I have a RP turkey hen who has been laying on eggs for about three, almost four, weeks. In one of the rare moments, I discovered her off the nest and decided to check on the eggs. Well she had other plans. As soon as she saw me, she marched right back to her nest and I was only able to get a glance. I spotted at least three to four broken and crushed egg shells, and only saw one whole egg before she laid back down on them. Before today (about 1.5 weeks ago), I was able to see at least 8-9 eggs on the nest, so there are at most 5-6 eggs left. But like I said I couldn't see very well. There is also a very bad smell from the nest, and now I know why (before I thought it was because the inside pen needed to be cleaned out). How do I get her to stop being broody? I am beginning to think that I should save the eggs that I can that are left before they get crushed too. Her interactions with the eggs before have been very gentle and protective, so I am kind of surprised that this happened. It is her first time laying on eggs though. Should I force her off the nest? I suppose I should to at very least clean it out. Any tips on how to handle her? She likes to peck when I get too close.
