Got a broody - when I wasn't trying. I just hatched a baby chick in an incubator and took it out to the coop to show off. Then I filled my plastic eggs with mustard as an egg eating decoy. Next day my Bantam decided to sit on them and stay there. I repalced the plastics with real ones as they were laid and she has been sitting there for about two weeks, taking her breaks once a day to eat and drink.

Looks like you'll have baby chicks soon! I also have my first broody hen sitting on a batch of eggs, but mine got a bad start. Hope yours goes smoothly to the end! What breeds do you have under her?

Well her own egg is under there. There are 4 from what I think are auburn Javas (based on picture from my chicken book). Her friend decided to copy (another Bantam) so I gave her a couple of the eggs to sit on too. Going to have to split up my flock for safety I think. Have never done this before.

I think 1 of my bantam orpingtons waants to go broody. If she's serious about it, I'll let her. Last time she sat there for 20 days & then my pen flooded. Sure broke the broodiness fast! I stuck the eggs in the bator but only 1 out of the 5 hatched.

Good luck to your broody. I'll let you know how my two batches turn out.

Well have an update - quite sad but I saved 5 eggs, When my poor hen took her break my evil Javas ate them all, but luckily her friend was sitting on the other half of the eggs and they were still there. I got a small hen house for the 3 sweet hens including my 2 broodies and moved them yesterday. My first broody is sitting on the five eggs and feels much safer in her new home with her friends.
