Brought home a puppy today! :D

I'm shocked that the pound let her go. But all the better she'd developed weird habits if left there. You can start training her now if you want. Simple things like sitting for food and no biting people. It be a good idea. Her mom would have taught her her to play nice and other good things. You have to do it now. I'd give her a stuffed animal to sleep with. Only if she wont chew it. If she chews take it away at once. You can give her the first shot of parvo instead of taking her to the vet. Make sure you are not the only one who cares for her. Separation anxiety is no joke. It's much easier to prevent then to fix. That's probably more info then you wanted. So i'll stop typing now. Have fun and enjoy her.

I am really shocked the pound let her go this soon too. Since she was a pound puppy, chances are good that her mom was never vaccinated which means the pup may have NO immunity to parvo. Under those circumstances I would not wait until the pup is 6 weeks old.....I'd get her first shot now. The reason behind not giving shots too early is that you will destroy any immunity she got from her mom, but there is a good chance she got none. Have you talked to your vet about vaccinating her? I'd give them a call ASAP and see what they say.

Haha I thought you had taken one of my pups before I realised you got her from the pound at 4.5 weeks old

That's not how it works. Dogs can have plenty of immunity without any vaccines, through low level exposure. Parvo is everywhere and a dog will develop immunity if they are exposed in small doses in the environment. Moms, vaccd or not, will have some to pass on. Early vaccines do NOT destroy maternal antibodies, they will be BLOCKED by maternal antibodies. The reason multiple puppy shots are given is not because more are needed to make immunity but because the chnaces are good at the young age that the shot will be blocked, thus ineffective. So, the "logic" is to vax them 4 times because one of those times will work..you could also simply wait till after 14 weeks when the maternal antibodies are gone, and then the ONE shot will take.
Also, vaccines are initially immunosuppressive, so if you get your pup a shot, you need to wait two weeks before taking it to a high-cootie zone to give the immune system time to recover. Shots are NOT instantly protective. Many a pup has actually GOTTEN parvo because they got the shot and then were exposed to the virus shortly thereafter.
