Brown face Orp chick

There was a conversation recently about an Orp chick like that turning up from a black to black mating. The consensus was that it probably was carrying the chocolate gene,or at least that was a plausible explanation.

I was referring to a mixed color not specifically two different types of chickens. If you breed a buff to a black and you get a resulting black bird, it is not a true black. It still carries the buff gene. So in turn if you breed it to another black looking bird that is carrying those same genes, then you can get the other color genes popping out. This can happen for several generations.

Yes this is second generation of the Orps. I can post a pic of the 2 pairs I have to show ya what they look like tomorrow...I love my cute little chickie.

YAY!! Chick pictures!!! I have been getting the chick fever again. I keep telling myself that Soon I will have more little chicks in the brooder. ANYway, I have been doing some personal research and study in regards to genetics because I will be breeding my female dog later this spring and have been studying pedigrees etc. to line up the best genetic potential for the mating and resulting litter of pups. Not that I am an expert by Any means, but, as others have already stated, your chick is probably the outcome of two recessive genes that have bound together and are being outwardly expressed. It could Also be that one of the parents is carrying the recessive gene while the other is not. So, one parent is true for the black gene while the other might not breed true for black. Either way, a chick(or any offspring of any species) is Quite the miracle!!!
