Danish Brown Leghorn
Hatch date-October 7 2015
About 22 weeks old and just laid her first egg. Super flighty birds. Why don't the like me?!?

My 19 week old Isabelle leghorn is like a flash. Now you see her, now she has panicked and hidden somewhere. I don't thing she even sleeps. The DBL are actually calmer than the isabelles. They have gotten to the point they don't try to commit suicide when I walk in to feed them. I have some that hatched and brooded with SFH and isbar. They act like more the calm breeds and you can even pick them up, if you are super fast. Amazing you got such a good picture.

I really like the Isabelle coloring, and have been told that they lay well for a colored Leghorn.

However, I have promissed myself that I will never again buy birds with single combs... So, thanks for letting me enjoy the photos!

Did you get some isabelle or DBL eggs from the ones @1kluckychik got? Are they doing ok after the 5000 mile trip?

Achem. :(

They are supposed to hatch in a few days.

One egg had a tiny bubble in the aircell, and that one never started.

I need to check again, but I think all of the rest did start.

However, by maybe day 15 most turned into blood rings.

The joy of shipping.

I've never had leghorns in my flock before and wanted to get some. Is it true that they are "laid out" in only two years? Thanks for any advice! :jumpy

The production white leghorns are the absolute best layers, and are not bred for vitality past one and a half years of age. That means, they have a higher rate of issues like prolapse, internal laying, and are more susseptable to things like vent gleet.

However, they can be just fine for many years. I have a few three year old production whites, they do NOT lay impressively any more. I think they are down to only once or twice a week. However, their first year they laid very close to every single day, and the second year they were almost as good.

My dark brown leghorns are not as production oriented, and never layed every day, but I think they will give me a decent rate for longer, at a guess four eggs a week.

I'm sorry. Those had quite a ride. I just pulled a bunch of my shipped eggs for the easter hatch along. Most had blood rings. Mine only came 1000-1200 miles though. Nothing like yours.
