Brown Leghorns: Pics, Info, and Resources

I have had rose comb whites get red in the face so soon that I was positive they were boys... Crazy early.

My dark browns do not get red until right before they start to lay.

All of my Leghorns are Single Comb. I have both Single Comb and Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites. I cut down on my different breeds. I kept the different breeds in community pens and would separate them during the breeding season but ran out of room for all of the different breeds so now it's more manageable to have the Leghorns, RIR and RIW's. I would like some RC Leghorns but they aren't easy to find. I had a difficult time finding breeders for my Brown Leghorns. The Leghorns do mature quicker than my other pure heritage birds.

I have shade trees and shade/rain tables for the birds to get under. I also have sprinklers in the pens which I usually put on for awhile during the day. It cools the sand under the trees and the birds like to lay and scratch in the cool damp sand. Yeah, I have the heat in the summer and you have the cold and snow in the winter so Rose Combs would be better for you but I still like my Rose Combs too. The last time I was in Alaska was 1990. Seems like yesterday.

Yep, that is why I have gotten away from the single combs... All of that flesh to frostbite.

That is my only issue with my rose comb leghorn roosters, they still have giant wattles. :sick

Does anyone know if the ABLC is still in existence? I tried emailing some of the officers from listed on the website but I got a lot of returns and I think one fellow passed away. I got on the Facebook page but I was kinda hoping to join the club too.

When I was looking for Brown Leghorns I sent some messages to the group inquiring to ask who any breeders might be and never got any responses. I just happened upon 6 little pullets which I took but am still interested in finding any breeders.

I am actually not sure.... I never joined the breeder group

keep us posted as to what turns up.

The Facebook site is wuiet but not dead.
Roger that - I will. I also asked the same question on their Facebook page and never got a response, so I kinda get the feeling there aren't many Brown Leghorn fans left out there.

I want to get started breeding them but couldn't find a breeder to purchase from. I joined the APA and Livestock Conservancy for networking to find a breeder but so far no luck. So I ordered 15 straight run chicks for delivery in October from Murray McMurray so I can at least start some sort of breeding program. I know it's ideal to start with the best you can find from a breeder but there's not much you can do when there aren't any breeders around. Hopefully the MM birds will be fairly nice. I've ordered broilers from MM before and they really turned out good but I have no idea how their Leghorns will compare to heritage browns. Can't hurt to try though; maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. You wouldn't think anything as common as a Leghorn would be hard to find breeders for. Gosh, imagine if you were looking for pure bred Dorking's or something on the critical list.
