Brown Leghorns: Pics, Info, and Resources

My BL woke me up at 5am this morning doing their egg song. They have doing this a lot more now. They don't lay there eggs til about 2pm, but do this song all day long. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm think about getting rid of my 2 because my neighbors are getting annoyed.

Oh good grief! Could you make their coop darker? I bet the early sunrises are waking up your girls, and they just want to great the day.

I know some city people with roosters have their rooster sleep in a dog crate in their garage. Maybe you could do something like that?

Do they quiet down once they're out of the coop? My laying hens of different breeds don't make any noises, really, until they lay their eggs and do the predator distraction honking type noise. My Buff Orpingtons are the most vocal and way louder than my Barred Rocks. I've already heard the BL pullets chortling and testing their noises. I hope they sing. We are on 3 acres, so we have ours on the back acre and I don't open them up until past 7am, just in case the neighbors don't enjoy old (BO) Elvis' big crow fest that early. Now that we will have multiple roosters-it could get tricky! They like to have crowing contests!

Anxious about transition time! We have had our BLs in a wire brooder pen in the chicken yard with our Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks for weeks now. Tonight the hubby said it was TIME. So, we snuck them into the coop after dark. I wanted to put the whole brooder in the coop and keep them separate a bit longer, but it didn't fit. I'm trying not to worry about what will happen tomorrow. I'm worried for all the BLs, but especially for Big Red, our cockerel. He's my boy. He's also a scaredy cat. He tucked into my sleeve when I pulled him out of the brooder and didn't want out. Our BO roo has been the lone roo for years and he's HUGE. Besides worrying about the bigger chickens picking on them-we have a fairly high fence, but I'm wondering if they'll try to fly out. The chicken yard is a full acre, so I'm hoping it will be easy for the birds to get along.

How did the transition go?

When mixing geoups together I like putting in at least two of everything (feeders, waterers, perches), otherwise the young ones might be bullied off of the feeder, etc.

I hope it worked out!

It is going fairly well. It's a very large coop and an acre to roam in with multiple waterers. We only have one feeder set up, but I tried to stick a small one with the grower crumbles in it in a spot I'm hoping only the BLs can get to in the coop. They do whatever the Barreds and Buffs will let them get away with now. They are still wary and I'm not excited about them eating the bigger birds layer feed, but they seem to be enjoying the freedom. I quickly found out that the BLs can slip right out of the 4x4 goat fence we have up. I imagine they won't be able to when they're full grown. Luckily, they don't seem terribly interested in doing so. One just popped out to say hello to me while I sitting out there hand feeding the big chickens some clover.
