Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, It's cold outside!

Lucky you Cynthia!

Well, I would be if I liked snow! Lived in Ohio for 12 years, Utah twice and Colorado once. Ohio killed any desire for snow I ever had. That is the worst weather in the world, wet, icy, below zero temps, all the awful stuff in one. All I see when those pretty flakes start falling is the slushy, muddy mess I'm left with and the icky pens for my birds that won't dry out for a week. Snow belongs on postcards! Crazy people in the south think it's gold falling from the sky and can't get why I'm not thrilled. All the relatives call us when they think we're getting snow.

Didn't mind snow out west so much because it was powdery. My birds are all locked inside, mostly because of poor naked Lexie. She still is mostly bare, although her quills are starting to come in now.

Well, it's also snowing in the Atlanta area, I'm just letting my hens do whatever they chose. I figure they know if it is too cold outside of their coop. As you may detect, I'm a libertarian. I even believe in letting the hens have the right to choose for themselves....lol

Kimberrrr:ya

My flock is pretty hardy, they go out several times a day and have no problem traversing the snow. My dogs pack it down so it's easy to walk on. When it's real deep I'll shovel or snowblow an area for them right after the storm.

Tomorrow we get the real cold blast the mid-west has now. I'll pug the heat lamp back into the timer, which is just enough to keep the waterer from freezing inside the coop.

I closed the pop door. It's so windy out and very cold! One of my hens is in a molt and doesn't have much to keep her warm. Worried about her getting too cold. Poor thing looks horrible. So I'm trying to keep the coop warm for her. I sprinkled some scratch on the shavings and chopped up parsley...they love that.

If it wasnt for my poor Lexie, just like your hen, I'd have their door open. My DH is the one saying, "But it's too cold!" and I'm saying, "But, they're fine!". Chickens are hardy critters and my coop only has a heatlamp over the waterer to keep it from freezing.

my birds wouldnt go outside yesterday in the snow I realy wanted them to also but that is ok with me they were just being realy lazy lol.

hi it's been singles here and mine are out. even sleep in the trees at night. they'e okay don't worry. they'll be fine til you get back.

and yes to whoever said some kinds of snow are worse than others. dry snow is way different than wet snow. agree.

Brrrr! -17.9 degrees here this a.m. only warming up tp -4 today. I am keeping the lights on for heat 24 hrs. Probably for about 3 more days. Its 24 in their coop. They like their pop door open during the day to peek outside. I close it up early though. Straw bales make a tunnel by the door to block the wind. Extra scratch in their coop. Also a hanging bird feeder filled with greens and whatever veggies the grocery store is throwing away. They are a hardy bunch. Hope everyone has their snuggies on!
