Bruce Did it!

She sounds like a excellent beardie! Does she take reptile pelleted food or live feeding? I've heard feeding them was a bit pricey at first but I think I'd be able to handle it. Luckily, being a aquarist for years has helped me with at lot temperature and lighting. Those to this day proper lighting for my planted tanks is a bit of a struggle

. I had no clue they didn't urinate! Yea cresteds are so much more fragile I'm surprised hatcheries even breed with them anymore. Racers are so adorable when they are young! Luckily I haven't had any predatory issues with snakes yet but the neighbor's escaped Viper came close!
All live food. She had gout when she was younger (I adore her but knowing what I know now- I would have gone to a breeder for one) and we had a rough start. And now she eats very poorly (not for lack of me trying though). When they are under a year much of the their diet is protein, but once older it should be mostly vegetables. Actually the ducks and chickens - aside from the feed- eat the same! Dark leafy greens chopped small, some lettuces on occasion but lettuce is not usually recommended for beardies, chopped up berries and the occasional chopped grape...crickets, butterworms, wax worms (very fattening), superworms, reptiworms etc...altho for ducks and chicks you need to offer mealworms instead of superworms. Beardies should not have mealworms- they have very little nutritional value and too much chitin. I think superworms would still be great for ducks/chickens though- just the small ones.

So if I buy too many bugs and she won't eat them- I can pass them down to the ducks or chickens which works out fantastically!

Sorry to hear she's had such eating problems! I wish previous owners would realize how much what they do can affect the rest of their lives. I have a rescue ferret that's blind in both eyes thanks to improper nutrition. I had no idea they was such a variety of live foods available for reptiles! Defiantly something I'd have to do plenty of research on if I ever started raising them. It does sound like fowl and reptiles do go hand in hand though!

Oh yeah! It was because of getting my beardie that I learned to be so diligent in research. And joining forums. It would have saved me some money in the beginning too. I did some research but the books just didn't cover that some brands of lights were actually harmful to beardies. Who would know that if you didn't join a forum for beardie owners? The pet store clerk assured me that calcium sand was excellent for beardies. Umm no it isn't. It can cause impaction. They tell you to feed them mealworms- which are like feeding a duck some bread covered in bark. I am so grateful for forums like this!

I did my duck homework before getting ducks, but this forum really made all the information come alive for me and it started making more sense. This place also taught me to trust my instincts with the ducks. I listened to the feed store about duck care- it was awful advice. Caused one duck death on my watch. It was horrible. Love forums!

Oh and just in case you get bored some time...

Where I get my bugs. And since these are all caterpillars and mealworms etc...our birds can eat these too. Although I doubt many duck, geese or chicken owners will go to all the trouble or expense. ;) But lotsa bugs right to your door! :D

Ah yes forums are defiantly so much help! The original people fish store I used to go to tried to get me to keep cichlids and goldfish together

. Not to mention the original feed store I used to buy from tried to sell my cracked corn for the main source of feed for the ducks

. So glad I had BYC to help clear up any feed questions! Thanks for the insect link! I've actually been looking for some dubias for a occasional treat for some of my animals.

I've heard great things about them as well! What kind of set up do you have for them?

Just to update everyone I ended up losing one of the babies today.

Thanks Chef. I'm not honestly sure. It was completely predator proof and no signs of a predator even trying. It appeared Bruce accidentally stepped on it.
