Bubbles from Eyes (non-injury) - CRD?, Treatment?

Question: What is recommended for a mixed flock (layers, pullets, ducks) when I have several coveted Silky chickens with what I believe to be CRD (bubbles coming from eyes).

Symptoms/Signs: They are still eating, drinking, etc., but have bubbles coming from their eyes. They scratch at their eyes, and one Silky this morning was moving her head back and forth rapidly almost uncontrollably.

Treatment Used Thus Far: I have been using Terramycin (labeled for the treatment of CRD) to no avail. I also cleaned the eyes and nasal passage with a warm cloth.
• What is the duration to make progress using Terramycin, as I have been using it for a couple weeks now?
• I noticed it says not to use on laying hens where the eggs are used for human consumption. For how long, as I didn't see a withdrawal time on the eggs, only meat?

First , any sign of possible disease or bacterial problems in your flock you should quickly isolate the affected birds , remove and replace all bedding. If there are areas of large feces deposits, they should be removed, if not practical , the area should be treated with lime, or DE, copious amounts.

The only way I was able to cure some birds that I purchased from a swap meet with CRD, was with antibiotic injections. You can purchase the antibiotics and needles from the feed store. I think it was 10cc's by muscle, I used the breast muscle , you have to go in deep enough but not so far that you enter the chest cavity.

Terrimycin will do nothing for you. I recommend using Tylan 50 injectable, sold at TSC. You would inject 1/2cc for a large bird once a day for 3 days and 1/4cc for a bantam once a day for 3 days. Inject just under the skin in the breast area, inject in a different spot each day. When using tylan it is recommended to use a 20 or 22 gauge needle as it is very thick. You should see improvement within 24 hours of the first injection. Best of luck to you.

Terramycin is for use for 7-10 days.

You can't eat or incubate eggs for the treatment period + 2 weeks.

My chickens had something similar (turned out to be wet pox) I used Tylan with Terremicyn eye ointment. It worked like a charm! I isolated the sickies so it wouldn't spread... even though as it turns out pox is spread by mosquitoes! There are pics on my blog

I'd wash the eyes with saline eye wash..
and go with the treatment posted by "chickenlady".

Tylan products can be found at most farm/feed/livestock supply stores, such as TSC..
in the livestock section.

Wonderful advice! Thank you to all who posted. I ended up calling the State Vet so I could grab what I needed before I left work and commute my hour home. He also advised Tylan, but at a rate of 1/10 of 1cc, one time a day for three days for my 2-3lb Silkies. I also ended up quarantining and treating all five of the Silkies just as a precaution. This morning they looked much cleaner and perkier, but two still had an eye that was shut and bubbles coming out of it. Hopefully by day three they will be back to perfect.
