Hello, new to post but I’ve always read the information on here. One of my hens has bubbles, watery eye on one side and swollen a lil bit. I gave her VetRx tonight for the first time. What is it? Thank you in advance.

Please post pictures as soon as possible, that will help with diagnosis

Welcome to BYC. It sounds like a respiratory disease called mycoplasma gallisepticum or MG. It can be confirmed with testing by a vet or poultry lab. MG is a chronic respiratory disease that can cause conjunctivitis (pinkeye) and sinus infection. Certain antibiotics may treat MG, such as Tylan 50 injectable, and that can be found at many feed stores in the cattle medicines. It requires a syringe and needle to withdraw it from the vial, but then can be given orally by removing the needle. Dosage is 1/4 ml per pound of weight given 3 times a day for 3-5 days. If you see a vet they may be able to give you an oral antibiotic. Here is some reading:

Ok it’s dark now but I will in the am. Wow thank you so much for all of the replies. So helpful. I did buy vetrx and Tylan 50 so I will give her tylan 50 tomorrow. Once again I’m so thankful for the replies.

I will try orally and see how it goes.
She’s about 3 years old. I will try to weight her tomorrow and see how many drops I will have to give her.

So the swollen eye is back, I started the med again but I feel it’s not getting any better. Is there anything else I can give her ? Don’t have any vets that treat chickens around here. Thanks.

How long have you been giving the Tylan? You could try Baytril (enrofloxacin) if the Tylan is not working after a couple of days. Dosage is 0.05 ml per pound given twice a day for 5 days. That equals 0.25 ml or 1/4 ml for a 5 pound chicken. Here is where you can buy it—get the 100 ml liquid 10% bottle:

If you should lose her, I would send her in to your state vet for a necropsy to get a diagnosis. Sometimes they can have secondary infections that don’t respond to Tylan.
