Buckeye Breed Thread

Laura, that was a great story about your Grandfather. My mom keeps telling me that my grandfather would be so proud of me with all my chickens and rabbits and the turkeys we hope to get in spring. He grew up on a farm and really missed it when he and my grandmother moved to Columbus and he got a job out of the coal mines.

Thanks for the info about the Buckeye's and the comb and mottled feathers. I set 15 eggs in the incubator yesterday morning so that is good to know for when they hatch.

Actually, I should have said something about it sooner, and am putting together an insert for when I ship hatching eggs. Sorry I didn't tell you before I shipped them out this week! Again, it doesn't happen often, but just fyi...

Not in my experience, no. In what book did you read this? And can you provide a link? I've never even heard that before, and do not find it to be true in my birds.

That's too bad! I've read this in a couple of the websites that talk about Buckeyes, and the extra dark meat was one of the things that attracted me to the breed. Nobody in our family likes white meat!

This may be helpful: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=9280-Comb_Genetics

Based on that information I would not want to breed a SC Buckeye because you would be contributing at least two recessive RC genes back into the gene pool. I also do not understand the correlation between comb genes and fertility. I would imagine that fertility would be due to fertility genes? Is there some correlation that I'm not aware of between comb type and fertility?

God Bless,

Laura, no worries. I am still learning about this breed and that fact that there is a recessive gene that causes a single comb to hatch sometimes would not have stopped me from getting them. By the way, I hatched my first 2 bantam Buckeyes today. I am so excited and happy that they made it. Here is a quick couple of pics.

Sarah, cute chicks! From whom did you get the eggs? I'm trying to put together a list of who has bantam Buckeyes. Right now I know of three other breeders (besides me, and you now!)

I read something, somewhere too but I think it said that it tastes more like dark meat not that there was more.

The eggs are from the trio I got from Jay at the Ohio National. So I have a trio and now 2 chicks to add, with 1 more bantam due Friday.

heres a ?? .... My buckeyes are 24wks old one of them laid a almost shell free egg? Only a membrane around the yolk. They are in a pen in the garage and free range 1/2 acre backyard everyday. Have had bantys and SLW for years never this problem . All chickens fed the same so am puzzled. These are great birds with personalites that make them a joy. Is this just an whoops or did I miss something??
